Actually, the drive is probably compatible with Windows XP under the proper conditions. First, you probably need to install software that either came with the drive or that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website that allows Windows XP to see the full size of the drive or you need to get a 64-bit version of Windows XP (called Windows XP x64) to get around the limitation of a 32-bit operating system such as Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional both are. Once you have taken care of this, you should be able to see the full size of that 3TB drive. Another option, of course, is to modernize and get a 64-bit copy of Windows 7 (whether Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate). I do not recommend Windows 8, however, as it has a number of compatibility issues with both older hardware and various programs, not to mention the fact that the interface is a real mess to try to use.

Also, be aware that a 3TB drive will not actually show up as 3TB to the computer. The reason being that hard drive manufacturers have taken to using base-10 numbers to size their drives rather than using base-2 numbers as has traditionally been done. Thus, a 3TB drive will have 3 trillion bytes of storage available but a 3TB drive actually formats to only 2.72TB according to the way the computer reads it because there are actually 1,099,511,627,776 bytes per terabyte rather than just 1,000,000,000,000.

SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB, I just need a driver for the external HD. I have moved and I cannot find my disk for my computer. OS is Pro XP

http://www.hitachigst.com/support/index-files/simpletech-legacy-downloads. I am unsure which SimpleDrive version you have, but if it's the regular (not deluxe, mini, or 3.0), it should be the first driver on that page, assuming that Windows XP doesn't install the drivers itself when you plug it in.

My external hard drive is not being seen by my computer?

1 of 2 things can be wrong...1 (cable may be loose) unplug the cable (ext HD) connected to pc, now reinsert back into pc..try this once or twice...until you see it appear in my computer....if this is not working and your ext HD came with a CD software..uninstall (make sure ext HD is not connected) software, then reinstall make sure your firewall allows it to be connected....this should do the trick...now plug HD back up to pc...do not format your ext hd unless you really really dont want the data on it (format erases everything)

You will probably need to install the drivers that came with the drive for Windows to see it. Check out the instructions that came with the unit and it will walk you through installing drivers and connecting the drive to your computer.

Vista OS. USB detects device. Does not display

Vista and Win7 lite versions dont have all the drivers and functions of the full version, so some issue will always keep coming up....
if u can install XP then do this
if u know how to partition ur main internal HD then install XP and Vista in different partitions...
when windows starts..choose XP to load.
then try if ur Ext HD works in XP...
else let me know i will guid u the next steps...

My external hardrive is not allowing me to access my information but will instead shutoff and then the computer will reconize its presence. How can i access it while it is powered on

Hi,

When you write that after a restart/reboot the ext drive is not recognised/mounted, have you looked in Disc Utility to see whether the drive is recognised even tho' there is no icon on your Desktop ....

I say that because there might be no need to power the drive down/up again ... I'm curious to know about the Disc Utility thing first ...

I've seen a workaround that required creating an Automator Application to:
You then need to add this application as a Login Item and the ext TM drive should mount each reboot.

BTW, how often do you reboot your Mac? I leave mine running in one state or another pretty much 24/7.

Apparantly, the iomega hd is one that seems to have this issue, according to this.

I want to offer something that worked for me.I have an Iomega external
drive I used for back ups.Well my pc crashed and all of a sudden
nothing would recognize the drive, not even another pc.What I did was
after getting a device drivers not working properly. This is for folks
who are having problems with a USB port. What worked for me is I
uninstalled every USB in the device manager, then rebooted and it then
recognized my hard drive, and i was able to get to my precious
data. This was after a windows 2000 pro format and reinstall.I had been
using XP but could not reinstall XP,had to go with 2000 pro.Hope this
helps someone

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

Replace a "pirate" XP programmed HD with a genuine XP HD?

If you upgrade to a genuine verson of XP from a pirated one, it will be okay. The harddrive [shouldn't] reject the software.
