Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook

DVD Drive won't read DVD's.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Windows XP. My CD/DVD drive reads CD's, but not DVD's. I had a problem with getting my speakers to work before, but I installed a driver or something, and they work just fine now. Is there something I need to install to get it to read DVD's? If so, what is it?

    Sorry, the speakers have nothing to do with the drive.
    I just tried to play a DVD in Windows media player, and a thing popped up that said "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." ...I have no idea what that means.

    Thanks fowlercomp! However, I'm now getting a message when I try to play the DVD saying "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
    Sorry, I'm not the smartest when it comes to drivers and such. Any idea how to do that?

    You may have a bad drive. It "should" work.

    You can look for updated firmware to the drive -- you'd need to just just what drive it is. Try Start: Control Panels: System: Device Manager, and try to find the model number of the drive. You can then try to find the manufacturer's Web site and see if there's "firmware," which is essentially a software update to the hardware.

    If worst comes to worst, you may be able to get a replacement drive much cheaper than Dell might sell it to you. But one step at a time.

    In mentioning the speakers -- do you have any indiciation that anything you did there has anything at all to do with the drive?

    Yes. You  need softwware that reads DVDs such as NERO. Does it read movies? Try telling the Windows media player to play a DVD movie.

You just need to install a codec package(clickhere) for you to play the media...

    you can either try updating by typing in the manufacturer of your dvd drive and going to their downloads site or you can send it in for service.

AHhhhhhhh.

DVDs are encrypted. For a time, "they" didn't want you to watch DVDs on your computer.

You can use Windows Media Player with the right codec if you want.

A better option may be a free player that already comes with all the options, like a Swiss Army knife. Check out VLC from here:

    Well, if you're in for a penny, you're in for a pound ...
    This link from Dell makes me think you have an ATI Xpress 1150 video card.

    So go to ATI's driver download link here:
    http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

    Pick your operating system (XP? Vista?)

    Pick Integrated/Motherboard

    Pick Radeon XPress 1150.

    Follow the instructions and you should have an updated video card driver.

    Now, if you do anything graphic intensive, you may want to update Windows' own internal video drivers. Go to Google and type:
    download directx

    The first link *from Microsoft* is the one you want. It'll be a relatively small file that you run; that program will then download all the updates. Don't be too worried about how many updates there are -- DirectX gets updated about every other month.

My dell inspiron 1501 has a error 0xc0000011 windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt also would not load any cd


Go into your bios and make sure that your cd drive is the FIRST BOOT device. Then load the dvd and run a startup repair.

read failure of the CD\DVD drive. If you were running diagnostics and have no readable media in the drive, that is a NORMAL result.
If you have readable media in the drive, try reseating the drive and try to read again. If the media is not a factory burned CD, try a factory burned one.
See if you can boot to an Windows CD.
If all the above fail, then likely a drive failure, replace the drive

On my dell inspiron 5160, I can play cd & dvd, & record cd but can not record on blank dvd, Roxio says drive is empty and no space?? I have fixed graphics card and reinstalled xp, hope you can help...


Are you sure it is a DVD writer, the specs for this laptop has a number of different drives one of which is a DVD/CD combi drive meaning it can read and write CD's but only read/plays DVD's.
Check the drive fascia if it says DVD-rom then it only reads them.

Dell 1501 vios2.6.2. reads missing operation system..then after 18 seconds it shutdown..pls..help... anybody has many opinion to fix it i appriciate it very much. tnks..


Missing operating system errors generally indicate a hard drive read failure. This could be for several causes.
  1. Hard drive failure (Run diags on the drive, if you get an error code, then time to replace)
  2. Software corruption (Too many possible causes to list
  3. Virus

So run Diags Fn+ Power, see if HDD passes diags, if it does, then boot to your windows CD and go to recovery console in XP, (Repair My Computer in Vista/7) in recovery console, run the command CHKDSK /R
If that doesn't resolve, then try a repair install of windows;

My disk drive is not working i am trying to down load a new program and when i put the disk in it will read it and then error appears


Hi saratrought, if Windows XP runs and you have read problems in CD/DVD drive try to read another disk, if any other disk work fine then you need to copy your CD/DVD info (or program) in another new disk.

Or just use Windows Explorer to try copy all data from CD/DVD disk to a New Folder in your Hard Drive and then from that location you can try to install your program, if your data don´t copy well then again i tell you that it´s your disk not your CD/DVD drive.

Dell Inspiron 1526 laptop won't boot up


The 2000-0147 error is normal as you had no disk in the optical drive to be read during the test. Boot to the Vista DVD and select the repair my computer option (you may have to run the repair process several times depending on the issues with the drive) See if that helps. If no go, then a reinstall of Vista is likely

My Dell Inspiron 700 laptop with Windows XP suddenly will not boo


Remove the hard drive, then see if you can boot to the XP CD. If you can, then the Hard DIsk Drive has most likely failed. Reseat the HDD and try booting to CD again. If problem comes back, try a new hard drive.
