Can you provide more details what you are seeing/experiencing?
What do you do and then what happens?

Happy to help, but I need more information ;-)

Thank you for offering to help. It is a Toshiba mobile external hard drive. After plugging into my laptop the ext. drive hums and the light comes on as if it is working then one of a few different things happens as I have attempted trying to make it work repeatedly. The drive may not show up once plugged into the USB port, or will show on the laptop but have no files appear and the light on the ext. drive blinks on and off, or a window has popped up stating the drive needs to be formatted. I found the external casing was lifting apart and there is a rattle within the drive as if a piece is broken. Kids probably dropped it. It worked since I found it this way but am now trying to transfer files to a new ext. drive and have ot been able to access. In researching it sounds as if there is a way to connect the ext. drive directly to the laptop but I have not found how this is done. I may be better off taking to a repair store because I do not want to do further damage and risk losing the photos and videos on this drive.

If you hear ratteling in the casing it is very possible that a piece of the mounting parts are broken off, which should not affect the drive itself. There is always the "freezer" option, where you put the drive in your freezer overnight. This works if there is a solder broken or the hardware is slightly faulty, since due to the cold the connetions are contracting. You can then connect your drive and copy all important files off. You can also take the drive out of the housing and put it into another one - again, this only helps if your original case is at fault. If there is really important data, I would bring it to a repair store, but be aware that it can be costly. I would recommend to try to put the drive in another case. If you hear clicking noises, the drive itself has an issue. I hope that's not the case. Let me know if you would like more details or have more questions.

According to the microsoft site your external hard drive which is the Samsung G2 HX-MU050DC doesn't need any additional software it is automatically installed when connected..Maybe try to connect it to other USB port I preferred you connect it at the back of your CPU..If this doesn't work try to connect your external hard drive to other computer if it still doesn't work. sad to say but the problem is your external hard drive..

It makes noise when i use it and can not tell if it is storing anything

I would be very skeptical of storing anything on there. A noisy hard drive can often be an unhealthy one (ready to die).

My good friend had the same external hard drive (smaller size) and it died on him.

If you can, back up anything you need to another location.
