SOURCE: Hello we have Bradford hot

No the top thermostat is the first place I would start to replace. They run about 14.00 more than likely it isn't controling right. Turn power supply to water heater off and replace thermostat.

If you was getting scalding hot and then turning cold without tripping the thermostat it would be the top element working and the bottom one bad.
Bottom element good it will give you luke warm water for a while then gradually turn cold because it's heating the bottom of the tank.

Hope this will help you out.

SOURCE: is there a reset button

Depends on gas control valve, and if cause is overheating high-limit event or FVIR flammable vapor event.
Turn off water heater when using flammable vapors, clean burner parts to prevent overheating.

1) GSW Residential power vent gas water heater with FVIR system:
Some models have intelli-vent gas contol
Others have robershaw gas control with auto-reset

2) Parts manual shows #15 'auto-reset' high limit switch on the blower
http://www.gswpartsonline.com/model/27484
http://www.gswpartsonline.com/schematic/137/view

3) Possible manual:
http://www.gsw-wh.com/pdfs/GPD135NInstall.pdf
Shows resettable lockout page 15
Water temperature must be 120 degree F or lower for reset. Unplug power cord, and then plug back in and wait 15 minutes or 60 minutes depending on gas control valve.
Some intelli-vent controls must be replaced when 195 degree high limit event locks out the water heater.
If high-limit lockout repeats, then gas control must be replaced.
Also clean burner parts, air intake, and make sure flame is clear blue. and not yellow-or-orange.

4) Intelli-vent service manual might apply to your water heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Intellivent-service-manual.pdf

If FVIR flammable vapor event locked out heater, then unplug heater and plug back in.
Immediately press two temperature buttons. Wait for green light to blink. Release buttons.

Vacation mode hot water heater

GE is made by Rheem.
Sounds like water heater is short cycling.
Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve, including error codes, and instructions how to replace each type of gas control valve.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent
Unforturnately Rheem does not post service manuals, and refers customers to call service technicians... so wonder where these guys get service manual... or maybe they guess at it.
However 2 year old water heater is under warranty. The date of manufacture shows on poduct label serial number. 3rd and 4th digit of serial number are year of manufacture. Parts are covered in second year. Rheem might require plumber to validate single-family residential installation.
In any case other companies post service manuals that cover same gas control valves. These manuals apply to Rheem.
Only difference between Rheem/GE and other brands is type of FV system.
If the air arrestor screen gets clogged (not likely with new heater), the intake air slows down causing vent to slow down. Same amount of gas is still being released and burned, causing combustion chamber to overheat. As a result, the TRD glass vial breaks and air intake trap door springs closed. At this point the gas control valve will usually signal error flashes indicating lockout. Shutdown is usually less problematic to homeowner than allowing too much gas to accumulate inside burner at once, causing risk of explosion. Gas appliance are dangerous without doubt.
Call plumber to check everything might be safest route, especially since low gas pressure is one possible cause of short cycling. And you will be comfortable afterwards knowing who to call and that gas appliance is check out professionally not to have defects that will cause problems down the road.

How to take off the thermal couple off a ge sg40t12txk

1) Copy following links:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-repair-Rheem-TRD.html

2) GE is made by Rheem, so air intake screen is located below the combustion burner, as is the TRD (thermal reset device).

3) Modern gas water heaters, the FVIR, or FV system will trip when air intake gets clogged with dust.
This will slow venting of hot combustion gasses, except burner is still burning same amount of fuel. Overheating occurs, and that trips FV system.
Other brands require cleaning air intake screen and possible replacement of gas control valve, or FV sensor, etc. Each model is different.
Rheem_GE overheating will trip TRD, and glass vial breaks, causing air intake to close. Glass vial must be replaced, and possibly the gas control valve replaced.

Possibly the air intake located at bottom of heater needs to be cleaned with feather duster under water heater.
Read your product manual for steps.

Other causes can be bad intellivent gas control valve, poor venting, hot attic, low gas pressure, dirty combustion parts, tripped FV system.

The service manuals are large files and open slowly.

Probably don't have good news for do-it-yourself repair.
Richmond is Rheem.
Rheem gas water heater manuals say to call service technician if the combustion chamber FV sensor has tripped, or if water heater has flooded.
FV trip requires part replacement, and flooded heater has to be replaced.

I read one thread that might help:
http://www.diychatroom.com/f7/rheem-hot-water-heater-pilot-burner-not-staying-lit-65755/

I posted same question on pro water heater forums, and the plumbers will not man up and tell how to replace the part. They cite legal issue because gas water heater is dangerous, period.
They have a point, but I am still looking for a good DIY answer.

If repairs are more than $330, then buy a new heater at local box store and install yourself same day.

Water hearer gas valve locked out. has code #15 fv sensor. has no flammable vapors around. how do i reset?

If water heater has FV event, check your manual for re-setting procedure.
Look at label on side of tank for brand and model number of your water heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html
My understanding is that Bradford White has resettable FVIR but all other manufacturers require service technician for part replacement.

I have found one internet thread that covers do-it-yourself FV.
http://www.diychatroom.com/f7/rheem-hot-water-heater-pilot-burner-not-staying-lit-65755/

I also posted same question on water heater forums, and nobody will answer 'due to liability concerns.'
This leads me to believe there are serious safety issues that could lead to manufacturer and-or plumber liability since FV-lock-out mandates were written to reduce widespread insurance property and casualty losses.

I have a GPVH 40 100 AO smith hot water heater. The FV (flammable vapor) sensor has been setoff from us painting the floor yesterday. How do I reset the unit?

AO smith manuals
http://www.hotwater.com/lit/im/r-gas.html

GPVH series manual
http://www.hotwater.com/lit/im/res_gas/315465-000.pdf
You can search the manual for FV

The FV sensor shorted because it detected flammable gas

Quote manual:
Flammable liquids (such as
gasoline, solvents, propane (LP or butane, etc.) and other substances
(such as adhesives, etc.) emit flammable vapors which can be ignited
by a gas water heater's hot surface igniter or main burner. The
resulting flashback and fire can cause death or serious burns to anyone
in the area. This water is equipped with a FV sensor for detecting the
presence of flammable vapors, see Figure 3. When the sensor detects
those vapors, the unit will shut down and not operate. Should this
happen, please refer to the troubleshooting guide on pages 28-30.

Troubleshoot step 14-15 says
replace the FV sensor
call tech assistance number that shows on water heater
AO Smith will refer you to a plumber
I don't believe homeowner can buy these parts due to Federal regulations
The shorted FV sensor probably saved you a flash-over
The cost of 2nd degree burns from a flash-over would be astronomical.
Fortunately you're ok, and the other folk in the room are ok.
In the old days.
Two guys I knew, winter 1978 Chicago, were laying VA tile using the black mastic.
They were killed and the house burned down because of the water heater.
Main office marked the event with a memo saying they still owed money on their account.

The only company with a re-settable FVIR that I'm aware right now is Bradford White
http://www.thetankatwaterheaterrescue.com/forums/forum3/2679.html
http://411plumb.com/bradford-white-defender-water-heater-review
Bradford White Defender FVIR is resettable without buying parts.

No power at all to my superflue water heater

Hi, first check and try and reset the breaker feeding the water heater. That should be a two pole breaker. The next thing to check is the red safety button on the top thermostat control. It is under the top access panel of the heater, along with a good amount of insulation. Push the red button to reset the safety switch. If these do not remedy your situation, then you will need someone on site to check the water heater in more detail.

My Superflue water heater is flashing Eco failure. What is this? What do I do?

Hi,
The ECO is short for emergency cut off.
The ECO is either tripped or it went bad. You may be able to reset it or you will have to contact a rep the sells your heater to get a new part. Some are resetable and some are not... not sure which you may have. The reset ones will have a little red button to push in the center.
The next rpoblem is to figure why the ECO went or tripprd in the first place. There is probably a reason or a cause. When you refire it make surte you donot have flame roll out and proper venting. Also make sure the the thermostat works and is not letting it get too hot.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!
