How is your power steering level, have you checked that recently? if its full, then your power steering pump might be not working, or your rack and pinion has been damaged already.
Your power steering pump went out and needs to be replaced or,
The drive belt that controls the PS pump broke

My RX8 had the same problem. First, change your battery cable ends. On the Positive cable there is a white wire that powers the power steering. It probably has a bad connection at the battery post. I cut the end off my rx8 and just put a regular battery cable end on it and my problem was solved.
The Mazda RX8 has electric power steering there is no fluid. You may have a problem with you electronic power steering control moduel, or the power steering pump
