Question about Dryers

Kenmore Elite HE3 not heating up when vent connected

My Kenmore Elite HE3 gas dryer isn't drying clothes very well. I opened the bottom panel and observed that the gas only ignites for a couple of seconds then goes off and repeats this cycle every 30 seconds to a minute. The part that I don't understand is that when I remove the vent tube connecting the dryer to the outside vent from the back of the dryer, the gas flame finally stays on until the exhaust heats up to 155 degrees. When I connect the vent back to the dryer, the flame goes back to only staying on for a couple of seconds at a time and the temp in the dryer only goes to around 90 degrees. Any idea why this might be happening?

Also, the vent if I leave the vent hose connected to the dryer, but unconnected to the outside vent, the Dryer works. As soon as I connect the dryer to the outside vent, it stops working. I cleaned out the lint trap, but that didn't help.

It was a clogged vent at the roof. I cleaned it and now the dryer works great. Thanks!

it sounds like a clog in vent.if yours vents up thru roof you may need to have a chimney sweep come out and sweep vent.check and make sure the vent hose is net kinked or full of lint.

You may want to check if the heating element needs replacing. Most Dryers have 2 heating elements that are found by taking the back off, some of the newer dryers have 3.

My dryer will not dry effectively, it is very slow to dry even on the high heat settings, any ideas?

i looked up your model number and you have a gas dryer not electric,if the vent line is clear and the metal duct that the lint filter slides into is clean i would say you have bad gas coils located on top of the gas valve, when the coils go bad they will work correctly for the first 15 to 30 minutes, when they heat up they fail and the flame won't ignite,so do this remove the screws that hold the bottom panel on,remove the panel and vac out any lint you see,if you have a shop vac you can set the vac up to blow and blow off the motor and blow all the lint forwards and vac it up,do this with the dryer unplugged, remove the lint filter and take out the screws that hold the metal duct in place and clean the duct out,put it back together except for the screws that hold the bottom panel in place but just stick the panel in place, put some clothes in and start the dryer, after around 20 or 30 minutes remove the bottom panel so you can see the ignitor,if the ignitor glows orange but the flame doesn't ignite and the ignitor goes out then you have bad gas coils.you should take the bottom panel off and remove the lint filter duct and blow and vac it out once a year, also if you vent line is long remove it from the back of the dryer and blow it out with a leaf blower, make sure nothing is blocking the outside vent like a cage or a piece of screen so the lint can blow out and not get blocked.the part number for the coils is 279834 and they are around 25 dollars, unplug the dryer, remove the bottom panel, remove the two phillips head screws, remove the cover, slide the coil up and off of the post, unplug the wire and connect it to the new coil, watch out on the big coil, there's a spacer that has to stay on the post, sometimes it gets stuck in the old coil when you remove it,let me know how you make out.

Check behind the dryer to make sure the tube running to the exit vent isn't clogged or blocked. Then go out side where the vent runs to and make sure it isn't clogged.

My Kenmore Elite HE3 Dryer is not drying. It does not seem to produce any heat. The dryer does start as usual, lint screen is clean. Help!

It may not be your heating element. Your dryer lint vent pipe out the back of the machine or maybe out the side may be plugged. You have to pull the machine out and clear that pipe or rebuild it out to a soffit vent or static vent if it is in the attic, or out through your crawl space. This will make a huge difference. If that hot air and moisture doesn't get out of the machine it just goes back into your clothes.
Good luck!!
