Do you want a changellage? Do you know how to solder? With a pencil thin soldering gun ? open the equipment(dvd) and carefully look for a cracked board. If anything, RESOLDER every large 'bump' of solder on the circuit board. they are usually ground or return paths for electricity and the "DROP" could have loosen the solder connection.

It could just need a good cleaning. Get a lens/head cleaner...they are around $6 at Target. Try that....if that doesn't work then is probably is a hardware issue and should just be replaced. It's not worth it to get it repaired as it would probably cost more to repair it then buying a new one straight out. Especially since you can find DVD players for as little as $20 now-a-days.
