The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.
The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board. You might be lucky it's just a blow fuse. Also a defective transformer can cause your TV not to power on.
All these can be checked on the power supply board.
But more often bad capacitors causes problem on the power supply board. I do not think the power board needs replacement, rather those defective capacitors is causing this issue. Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board.You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others.
The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)
You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.
What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).
You can buy these capacitors at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic capacitors). After replacing these capacitor(capacitors) most likely the normal operation will be restored. Or you can by a refurbished complete power board to save you some stress.
Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board,but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.
If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.
Look for a button like CC on the remote control pushes a couples times for all CC1,2,3 to all off.Or go to tv menu look for close captioning functions or text 1,2,3 make sure it all off.Tv will have no more black square boxes poping up any more.
You have either a burnt board or other curcuitry issues, the main power supply may also have burnt up on you. If you really want to save this you will need a qualified technician to look at this. Leave the unit unplugged till it is erepaire, there is always a possiblity that more shorts could occur and cause a fire.
That trouble is often a soldered connection on the scan board or the power supply (most likely). When the sets are manufactured they are "wave" soldered. If a connection isn't perfect over time it will begin to crack due to the heating (set on) and cooling) set off cycle. That stresses the connection until it eventually fails. It often becomes intermittent and eventually will fail completely. That is often a simple fix. If you have experience soldering connections in modern electronics I suggest that you open the back and look for the board that the power cord attaches to (power supply). Often those cracks are nearly microscopic. If you look carefully with a magnifying glass you can find them. Resolder that connection and it will most likely not trouble you again. I often ran into these sorts of problems before I retired and always resoldered the entire board one connection at a time. One failed connection indicates that there are others that are potential faliures. Always use a soldering iron with a tiny tip and made specifically for electronics repair.
There is hope, if you can't do this repair by yourself then contact a qualified TV repair station. They will most likely resolder any suspicious connections on that board also.
well first of all smoke is never a good sign.probly has power supply issues.but anyway it should not be to hard to fix.should cost around $ 80 to $120 to fix .the hard part is going to find a service center that will give you a free est or close to free( under $20) or you could shearch out where the smoke came from should be fairly obvious and go from there
This TV has lost it's vertical deflection. When all the TV x-rays are concentrated in a single horizontal line, the TV power shuts off automatically due to the built in X-ray safety device. When the vertical deflection IC burns out, it usually takes part of the circuit board with it. It will not be an easy repair. A 500+ dollar repair at the least, involving finding the burnt out components and replacing them.
OK, it looks like a power supply problem. The click you are hearing might be the shutdown relay connected to the overcurrent circuit. This might be indicating a problem in the Hv section of the TV. To get the tape out you can restore the power supply or what you could do is to try to access the drive motor and find the load and unload gear and try to turn it to take the tape out, this has worked in the past at my shop.
If you have no experience in electronics I would suggest you not trying to repair this set because of the danger involved. Take it to a qualified repair shop.
A couple of easy things you could try is to unplug the TV from the AC over night, to let it discharge, and see if theres any difference, and also try to connect it to another power outlet.
anything else is a bit tricky - if you have no electronic repair experience you should take the set to a repair shop. Some of the solutions described below can be dangerous, TV's are very hazardous to service. Even when plugged out, TV's can store very high voltages.
Its possible that you got some dry joints, look for poor soldered joints on the high voltage side, and resolder them. particularly around the high-heat producing parts and flyback, h-driver and other transformers, etc.... and look for obviously burnt or mis-shaped components.
