Question about Vacuums
Posted by Anonymous on
Hello, this is Ava with Think Crucial.
There are a number of reasons why your Dyson cleaner is running off and on. First, it can be due to a battery of the cleaner. Make sure that the power cable is properly plug to the power and seated properly from the unit while charging. If you find that the battery isn't charging at all, you may need to replace the battery. Second is to check the MAX button of your cleaner. If the button lights up and flashes when your Dyson keeps on pulsating, press and hold the power button and depress the MAX button to turn off the function. You may need to do it for a few times to get the hang of it. Third is to check for any blockages or clogs in the attachments. Look down through the tube and check to see if there are clogs on the sweeper end or if the roller is tangled up in fibers. Clean the roller brush are if it it's necessary. You may need to empty the dust bin of your unit as debris can build up in hard to reach places. Lastly, cleaning the filters may fix the pulsating of your cleaner. Remove the filter and rinse it with cold water and air dry it for 12 hours. Don't use detergent when washing your filters. If the pulsating doesn't go with the given quick fix, I suggest to contact Dyson for further assistance on this.

This is from the Dyson web page:
Get expert help Thermal cut out Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filter needs washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine turns off on its own, unplug it and leave it for at least an hour to cool down. Remember to check the filter and look for blockages before re-starting.
Any non- domestic use may adversely affect the filter performance such as vacuuming up plaster dust.
Sounds like your vacuum is overheating. Check the above.

I had the same issue. Got on the phone with Dyson. THe vacuum has a safety feature where if the motor gets too hot it cuts off. You have to leave it for 45 minutes or so and then it will work again. There is an underlying issue though. My problem was the black gasket thats in the debris bin shifted, probably from when emptying i pushed it on something. The black gasket should actually hang off the bottom like a skirt and the 2 groves should fit in on the groves of the gray mechanism. This seal is what provides 100% suction. Because of this..my vaccumm has been accumulating pet hair by the belt which i hear alot of people talking about and especially in the filter area. This is because I broke the seal by not having the gasket in place properly and it wasnt sucking 100%. They are sending me a complete new cyclone unit which has the debris catcher as well as she said its probably so caked up with debris it will never work again 100%. no questions asked they are sending it to me free of charge.
So if you remove the clear cyclinder debris catch thing all you will have is the purple cyclone on top and on the bottom is the black rubber gasket....if that shifted and is no longer hanging off...call dyson cause your vacuum is probably caked up...it will never work properly...they will send you a new part
