I have found the manual at JD's website. Click the link and scroll down in the left column until you find the heading for replacing the belt. I contains big, clear photos. Here is the link:

Hi I'm Dane, and I'm going to help you solve you problem. Glad to finally get this answered for you. The piston should be set to top dead center on the compression stroke. Adjust the valves when cold to .004 Intake and .006 Exhaust. Torque spec is 61" lb .If you found this reply helpful, please leave me some THUMBS UP if you think I'm deserving! :-) Thank you! Dane

hello hird... you may have a gummed up carburator. get a can of starter fluid. get a helper. remove the air cleaner. start it up and leave it in neutral while your helper squirts starter fluid into the air intake for a minute. repeat if necessary until it no longer dies in gear.
if after 3 attempts check your mower deck as a frozen pulley wheel can cause this problem also. joe
