Question about Mitsubishi WT-46807 46" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

WT-46807 Red convergence is distorted, in an arch at the bottom.

The red convergence is distorted, in an arch at the bottom. The red convergence does not move when i try to align it with the remote. The blue and green guns are fine, and when I block the red gun, the picture looks great (except the funny colors from the lack of red) I consider myself good with electronics, however have never worked on tv's. I don't have a schematic to try to find the IC's that drive the red convergence. Are they on the pwb on the back of the CRT? Or are they on one of the other mainboard PWBs? Is there any way that you can help me locate these IC's and possibly a part number so that I can try to find replacement parts? If it would help, I can post a picture of what the problem looks like on the screen. Thank you in advance!

Yes your model is the V17 chassis mitsubishi. The Convergence Ics are located on the center board. you will need two STK392-570 convergence ICs. You can get replacement ICs at the following link and they provide free installation instructions. They are located on the backside of the wide heat sink with the fins on it on the center board

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Bowed picture colors off

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can more info and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Mitsubishi WT-46807 46 in picture bends and the blue red and white all seperates

intermittent convergence fail. suggest re-soldering the 2 convergence output ICs on the middle power board. they are the 2 large devices located on the largest heat-sink on the middle board(looking at from back) once you re-solder them as long as the aren't faulty internally you should be all set.

One of your convergence IC's has burned out or cracked loose and needs to be replaced or resoldered. This should be done by someone experienced in repairing and realigning convergence circuits.
