Use lighter fluid like the stuff ZIPPO lighters use, rub softly using a soft cloth and the residue will come off. Leave the petrol on to soak and "melt" the sticky stuff for about 30secs-1minute before you start to wipe off.

Black residue is getting all over clothing, every load. what is the problem? it's almost like some sort of shavings like off a piece of rubber or something. could it be a seal or something breaking...

Try checking the gaskets where the hoses connect to the water supply and the washer, I have found when they start breaking down they can sometimes almost melt onto the clothes.

We own a Maytag washer - model number MAH4000AWW. When I turn the tub, I can hear what sounds like a siginifcant amount of water somehwere within the unit. The machine sat for several month while our house...

It is normal to have residual water in these washers. As long as the water does not appear in the spin basket (stainless steel tub), that is. If the water appears in the spin basket, you have a problem with either your pressure switch, or you water inlet valve not shutting off. The residual water, however, provides a necessary barrier to prevent sewer gases from entering the appliance from the drain line. However, if the washer has been sitting for a long time the water will become stagnant (as you have discovered). If you own a wet/dry shop vac, remove the drain line from the standpipe at the wall and pull a vacuum on the line. This will remove all residual water without the need to disassemble anything. Then, prior to washing any clothes, I would recommend running a load with no clothes with hot water and a small amount of bleach. This will kill any remaining bacteria. I would recommend repeating this procedure about once a month, or more often if you do not routinely use hot water.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Leaves white clothes gray

Many of the machines are having a similar issue I am trying to find a resolution to fixing this, there are two issues. First Whirlpool has just recently identified a problem with premature bleach dispensing. Another dispensing problem I had is that fabric softener had to be diluted otherwise it would not wash out of the dispenser. And finally, the fabric softener dispenser would still hold a small amount of water after the wash cycle completed.Removing the top of some washers I have found that there is often a lot of stainless steel polish residue around the rim of the machine - which should have been cleaned away before the machine was shipped from Whirlpool. The gray, oily residue was not visible without removing the top of the washer. Knowing now what has caused the dark gray streaks on many peoples laundry.

Maytag top load washer growls like its skipping teeth/gears while agitating.

Hello tomlyoung59

it sounds like the coupling between the transmission and the agitator is bad . You know the transmissions now a days have plastic gears in them and if you continue to use it may blow the transmission!
Speed queen is the only one I know with stainless steel parts in the trans and only 6 moving parts in the trans too.

How old is the washer?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you it may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliances are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!
Water,Electric and detergent! And put money back in your pocket!
The new appliance will pay for itself in only a few years!

What actually will happen over time is the stainless steel retianing hub and nut diseningrate and the tub becomes loose. Then the spin cycle will destroy the top balancing ring. When this happens - the washer is junk - not worth repairing.
Before that thou - other mechanical problems can happen, like u-joint breakage. These washers are absolute junk.
