Sounds like the harddrive went bad.
Some people call it the click of death.
Put the laptop to your ear near the harddrive and you will hear the clicking coming from there.
Good news is that it's easy enough to change the harddrive.
Bad news is you lose all your data to this point.
I hope this helps and i'm sorry that happend to you.

If the system turn on and off and again on automatically, sometimes the problem is in GMCH. ie in the graphic chip. There are other reasons also. You have nothing to do unless you are a chip level technician. Contact me if you are. Make a reply for this because I will get satisfaction by it.

hallettd, have you ever had the inside of the laptop cleaned out?
Air is used to cool the hardware components inside.
The Fan Assembly draws air into the laptop.
The Fan Assembly draws air from the Bottom of the laptop. As such, all kinds of debris can be picked up.
Dirt, dust, hair, (People/Animal), lint, food crumbs, you name it.
This debris clogs the cooling system of the laptop, and drops the cooling capacity tremendously.
When the laptop overheats the Processor turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a fail safe feature built in. Keeps the Processor from burning up.
No Processor operating, no computer.
After a few times of this there is an error code stored. When you go to turn the laptop on, the code comes up, and laptop turns off.
Suggest you clean out the inside of the laptop, or have a technician perform it.
If you would like to try to clean out the inside of your laptop, simply post in a Comment. (As a member you can also click on my user name - joecoolvette, and read through the solutions I have given for this procedure)
