New Singer 8280 needle breaks when using overcasting foot

I have used the overcasting foot with no problems. I check to be sure the needle and foot are secure. Then I turn the wheel by hand to assure that the needle does not hit the metal part. Then I sew with no problem (for awahile). Suddenly, the needle breaks. I have read the entire manual that came with the 8280. I have also broen all the needles.
Thank you for your help.

SOURCE: New singer 8280 needle hits overcasting foot and breaks

so, it sews for a while?  It sounds to me like the screw that holds the needle in place is loose.  As the needle moves up and down the screw loosens until that one fateful stitch, it comes out completely.  Try to tighten with a screw driver.
the other possibility is that it breaks if you are sewing over a bulky seam, like a flat fell.  as the presser foot "toes up" to go over the lump, the needle hits and there you are.
holler if that doesn't help.

Frequent thread breaking

Hai, Please check the thread tension and change the new thread and new needle. Otherwise put the some drops oil in the top and bobbin thread. Or go to mechanic shop.

I keep breaking needles

Are you trying to sew a zig-zag stitch with a straight stitch foot so the needle is striking the foot? Or is it an issue of the material being very thick?

I just googled this machine and it looks pretty lightweight so perhaps you are expecting it to sew fairly heavy materials such as jean seams and it is struggling to do this.

Also keep in mind that you should select a needle appropriate for the sewing job, so 60 or 70 for chiffon and lightweights, 90 for medium weights, 110 for heavy weight and use ball point needles for stretch fabrics.

Hope this helps a bit.

I have a Singer model 1120. I recently ordered an overcast foot, which I have been unable to use because the needle breaks What are the machine settings when using the overcast foot on model 1120?

On page 22 of your manual tells you exactly how to do it. I don't know which model you have A, B, or C, so I am not sure what stitch adjustments you make. But, if you do not have a manual go to www.singerco.com and download your manual for free, then enlarge the diagram and you can see it very clearly. Good luck, and happy sewing.

My presser foot lever wont lift the presser foot all the way up on my singer

Make sure that your needle is in the highest position, turn your handwheel towards you, not away from or else you will mess up the timing

Thread mess at the underside of the fabric

Hi, maybe your bobbin is turning the wrong way and you need to flip it over. Or you don't have any top tension. Be sure the thread is in between the tension disks with the foot up. Its also possible that there is a burr on the hook part that goes around and grabs the top thread. The thread will catch on the burr and cause this issue. Usually after breaking a needle. Then the burr would need to be polished off.

Top thread goes for awhile and then breaks. Alsoo

Try a fresh needle and be sure the flat side of the needle shaft is facing the back of the machine.

Thread the machine with the presser foot in the up position.

Make sure the bobbin is inserted into the case so the thread is feeding from the bobbin spool in the correct direction and through the proper guides.

Hold onto the thread end at the needle and hand-walk the needle down into the needle plate and back up, bringing the bobbin thread with it.

Take both thread ends under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.

If you are not able to free this easily, you really should consider taking it to a service technician to look at it in case you do more damage to the needle bar and elsewhere trying to fix it yourself.

Simple solution..
take the thread off your machine, set your tension to the middle setting. rethread your machine up to the needle. before threading the needle, put your presser foot down. If your thread pulls hard, then the machine is threaded right. If it pulls easily, you need to chead the thread thru the tension wheel.

Rule of thumb.
Loops on the bottom, problem on the top.
Loops on the top, problem is on the bottom.

Breaks needle

Yes they can indeed go out of time and breaking needles is the most likely cause. To solve timing problems you will need a sewing machine engineer though. The part which needs adjusting would be the area above the needle-the needlebar but it is a fiddly affair only to be attembed by someone who can repair sewing machines. It is also a fairly expensive repair as it is very time consuming. However-don't assume it is that. Firstly make sure the new needle is in correctly-the most common cause of problems is needles in wrong direction! If bobbin opens at front then the flat part of the needle faces the back. If bobbin area opens at side then the flat side of needle faces the body of the machine to the right. Check needleplate for damage so that new needle does not catch. File it smooth if you need to! Check you are using a good quality thread as cheap thread causes no end of problems. Guuterman is the best I found.
