SOURCE: APEX GB65HD09W Convergence Issue!

You need to re-solder the circuit board that contains the STK convergence modules. They're on the center circuit board attached to an aluminum heat sink that's about 8" long and 6" tall, about dead center in the circuit board. You may be able to recreate the problem by gently moving the heat sink (which the modules are connected to). This is an indication that the modules pins aren't solidly connected (meaning soldered) properly. Remove the circuit board and clean the old solder off & resolder the modules pins to the circuit board reconnected the board and then retest by again pushing on the heat sink. This is a caused by a minimum effort (a.k.a. minimum cost) solder job, probably done in some 3rd world sweat shop. The "factory" job was good enough for 3-4 years but the heat (and these modules do create a lot of heat) and stress created from repeated use eventually takes it's toll, weakens the pin connections and our problem occurs. take the appropriate cautions working around the high voltage of the set & use a non-conduting piece of wood to push the heat sink when we doing tests.
Best of luck, hope ya fix it.

Here is your manual if all it is is adjustment. It most likely is the IC's that go bad that handle the convergence circuits. It is not hard usually, but you do need some electronic skills to get this done right. Brad

Apex GB43HD10 Convergence

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Convergence is when you aim all three of the projectors, your tv has three, so that the images they produce all line up with each other. This usually doesn't generate a white line across the middle of the screen though, there is a button on the front panel of your set that automatically converges the three projectors, you can try using that.

Convergence and wavey picture problem

Actually you have 3 problems. The two that you listed and the third which is: Apex does not support their units. Ask anyone who has tried to get any service. Your problem sounds like a bad digital convergence box. I fix this problem several times a week but on name brand sets. Cost is usually less than $100 for the part. Some problems with Apex equipment can be fixed if the part is a common off the shelf part. That is not the case with your problem. Apex equipment is cheap for a reason. All posts that I have read say that they do not last long and you can't get parts. That has also been my experience as a technician. We don't even accept Apex units for repair anymore. Next time spend the extra money to buy a name brand unit and it will more than likely be repairable.
