Batteries are not charging

Everything works fine, but thebatteries are not charging inside the unit. If I pull them out and recharge them, the UPS works fine until the batteries are too low. This happened after an extended power outage.

SOURCE: 'Battery' outlet dead.

These CPS650SL's are at that age where they need a new battery. You can find these at: http://www.batteryinternational.com/cyber-power-cps650sl-ups-battery-ups-batteries-f1.html

It's usually less expensive to get a new battery instead of replacing the whole unit. It only takes a moment and keeps it out of the garbage.

You don't indicate in the description the age of your UPS, but if it is more than 4-5 years then it is likely time for replacement.

Battert tab broke when attempting to remove (replace) batteries. Cannot get old batteries out of Smart UPS1000. Front-most battery appears to have swelled.

You'll need to remove the cover and battery cage from the unit. I've run into this before, just take your time and be careful there are likely some sharp edges inside.

When the batteries overheat and swell, they press against the metal in the unit and get wedged in.

Hello! I'm from Riyadh Saudi Arabia. I've left on my Tripp Lite UPS 1000 just last night. When I came in my office in the morning, my desktop computer including my computer server was OFF. I supprised that...

Unplug the computer. Then run the UPS self-test and the unit will display whether it finds an overload fault, whether the battery needs to be charged or replaced.
Here are the instructions (copied from the User Manual):
Turn UPS on: Press and hold the ON/OFF button for one second.

Run a Self-Test: Press and hold the MUTE/TEST button for two seconds (until alarm beeps several times).

The test will last 10 seconds. All LCD Display icons will be illuminated and the alarm will sound.

If the fault icon remains lit, the battery-supplied outlets are overloaded. Unplug powered devices until you remove the overload.

If the "Replace" icon remains lit and alarm continues to sound, the UPS batteries need to be recharged or replaced. Allow UPS to charge for 24 hours and repeat self-test.

Battery Recharge for Liebert PowerSure PSA

Yes, is the short aswer to your question. The battery should charge as you use the ups. If they don't then its likely the battery/s have failed. Lead acid batteries do not like being left discharged for any length of time. In a motor vehicle the battery gets a bit of shaking around, but in an ups they don't. If not used and left discharged, the plates quickly sulfate up reducing the efficiency to nearly zero. Test and replace any battery that cannot support a test load, such as a bright12v light or a 12v soldering iron connected to it. The length of time required to charge the battery/s depends on their capacity (in ampere/hours) and the charging rate. A 14.4 amp/hr battery charged at say 1 ampere will take 14-1/2hrs to charge.(just as a sample)

I plug it in and there is no power output. I opened it up and put a voltage meter on the internal batteries and they were nearly dead. Do they need to be replaced? Plugged in to recharge. Unit sat unused...

After batteries sit for an extended period of time they slowly discharge. Sometimes charging them for a day or two may help. Sometimes not. The chemical action inside the battery has been used up, and will no longer recharge.

My advice would be to replace the batteries.

Batery faillure

Advanced Battery Management Technology Prevents Premature Failure and Significantly Extends Battery Service Life
Batteries are the most critical component in the reliability of any UPS, but they face three fundamental challenges: All Batteries Need Charging
But extended charging significantly shortens battery life. Most batteries are charged with a trickle-charging process (a constant voltage feeding a low current to the battery). This method dries the electrolyte and corrodes the plates, reducing potential life by up to 50%.
Batteries Take Time To Recharge
Users can’t wait. During prolonged power outages, the UPS batteries will discharge and not recharge until the power returns. When there is a subsequent power failure before the batteries recharge, the computer will not have full backup time. Overly rapid charging can cause premature battery failure, so the trick is to charge at the fastest rate that is safe for the battery.

All Batteries Will Eventually Fail
The question isn’t “Will it happen?” but “When will it happen?” Because UPS batteries are valve-regulated, sealed lead acid, there has previously been no practical way to provide the user with any meaningful advance notice that batteries need to be replaced. In the past, the only way to know when the batteries were dead was when the power failed and took your computer down with it. Until now, typical UPS batteries have required replacement every two to three years.
Our exclusive ABM technology solves these UPS battery problems. It significantly increases the life of UPS batteries (see Figure 1), provides the fastest safe recharge time, and provides reliable advanced notice when the batteries need replacement. By extending battery life and virtually eliminating this major cause of surprise load crashes, we are able to offer the industry’s longest and most inclusive warranties on all products that incorporate ABM. No other manufacturer can make this statement.
ABM technology is available on Powerware 5115, 5125, 9120, 9125, 9140, 9155, 9170+, 9355, and BladeUPS UPSs.

The battery plug in area is dead but the surge protector side works

Hello Vicki,

What you are describing is usually a result of the batteries losing their ability to hold a charge.

The surge protector side does not rely on the batteries.

I found good batteries at a reasonable cost on ebay, but I think you're going to need to replace batteries at this point.

Hope this helps.
