Could be camshaft possition sensor. Located in distributor assembly. Relatively easy fix, but costs around $150 being that it is a dealer only part. Hope this helps!

if your battery, and starter and plugs and wires is ok, then i would give the vehicle a fuel pressure test to see if the fuel pressure is ok according to the specs, if it is ok, i would check the fuel injectors.

I have a 1998 jeep wrangler 4 cylinder it is not cranking because it is not firing what could be the cause?. I have pulled the plug wire off to see if there is fire but it is not getting fire to the plugs.

COIL PACK HAS PROBALLY CRAPPED OUT.IF IT ELECTRONIC. SEE IF THE COIL WIRE HAS SPARK IF SO COULD BE A BAD CAP WIRES AND PLUGS OR ROTOR OR TIMING HAS JUMPED ON THE ENGINE

Miss Firing

You might have a small leak in your vacuum system, check all of the hoses and plugged vacuum connections. Check your plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor. Sometimes a crack in the distributor cap will cause carbon to build up. Since carbon is an electrical conductor it might be jumping from one cylinder to another that is not in line with the firing order.

Backfire into intake

I'ts quite possible that your distributor is installed one tooth off and is too far advanced, causing the plug to fire before the intake valves are closed completely. Turn it one tooth counter-clockwise and try it again.

I have jeep wranger i am getting fire to the cap but not to plug

did someone remove the rotor ? remove the cap and verify the distributor rotates when you crank the engine , and that the rotor is there , i doubt you have all bad plug wires , not even likely , so back to basics . a defective cap is possible .

Spark plugs

Firing order for the 4.0L 6-cylinder is as follows:

1-5-3-6-2-4

As for the spark plugs, it looks like the Autolite AL 985 plugs are what you need. If you are going to replace the plugs, might as well also replace the plug wires, the distributor cap and rotor (if you have those, I dont recall which year they went to the distributorless ignition).
