Question about Computers & Internet

My computer will no longer recognize the memory

I tried to upgrade my MB from 12gb of ram to 14gb ram with 2 new moduels that were bad (I tested them in another computer and they wouldn't work) With the bad ram installed, on boot-up I get 3 short beeps telling me I have a memory problem. So i reinstalled the original working modules and now I still get the 3 beeps no matter how I configure the installation I always get 3 beeps. I removed the battery with now power supplied to the MB and also reset cmos and it doesn't make a difference. Could the bad ram effect my bios or possiblly the chipset on my MB.

Hi.

Try this >>>>

Remove the power cable and lay the computer on its side. Remove all the RAM from the unit ad make sure all the brass contacts are clean. After that take a look at the slots and make sure they are free of any dust.
Plug in the power cable and start putting the RAM back in one at a time turning the machine on with each module to try, that will determine which of the modules maybe faulty, it just maybe a case that you haven't put them in properly.

Good luck and regards.

Check to make sure you don't have any extra standoffs under the motherboard that may be shorting it out.

If you get several beeps then there is a video problem. The video card uses shared RAM (part of the main RAM) and if the RAM is faulty the laptop won't boot up.
You might have incompatible RAM, try to use the same make and speed RAM as the original.
One of the RAM modules may be faulty.
Try installing one 256Mb RAM module then boot up the Toshiba, if it works the try the other RAM module.

INSTALLED NEW RAM UPGRADE TO BOOST FROM 1G TO 2G COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE NEW RAM STILL SHOWS 1G.

Make sure it is the correct ram for your computer. If you just added one ram chip then try swapping them and make sure they have a tight fit.

To test the new chip replace the old one with it and turn on your machine. If it doesn't see it then it is either bad or not the correct one.

Let me know how it goes.

Here are the specifications of the Gateway 838GM: You will have to replace the existing memory with thesesettings only: The machine comes with: 512 MB = 256 MB (removable) + 256 MB PC3200DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR Nowyou can only upgrade to 4.0 Gig total. I would recommend going to this link and order the correct memory foryour computer I use them quite a bit. http://www.memorystock.com/memory/Gateway838GM.html Rob

RAM Recognition 835GM PC Desktop

the memory is dual channel, so you have to use matched memory for it to work 1gig in each slot if possible, check the 1 gigs and 512's to see if they run at the same bus speed, if they are not matched there is your problem try a gig and a 512 in slot 0 to see if it picks the memory up, also there is sometimes an option in the bios to dissable dual mode
