Question about Gateway Computers & Internet
You will need to clean the fan and air vents of dust, that is why the laptop is overheating. You can do this with a can of compressed air by aiming the nozzle at the air vents at the back or sides of the laptop and giving short blasts in. That should quieten the laptop down and stay on for much longer.
In some cases people have to take them to a PC repair store to have them cleaned properly as too much dust has built up around the fan blades and grills.

I found this with my old Gateway laptop. I ended up replacing the fan, but that still did not work. I found that just elevating the laptop in the back works. For a more permanent fix, purchase a flat fan base that goes under the laptop and plugs in via the USB port. You can carry it with you since it is very slim. I also took out the battery because I think it was overheating as well even though I was using the AC. It took me a while to figure out why it kept shutting off, until I felt how hot it was. And I am sorry to hear that in 2013 this is still a problem. I am actually working on fixing my MX7118 laptop. Is there any way you can send me the recovery discs via download for me? I am having a hell of a time finding these for free, and I have no idea what I did with the box with the discs (purchased in 2004). email@example.com. Thanks!
