Is it possible to install Win7 update on replacement HD - a HP Pavilion dv4000 Notebook PC

I need to replace the failing hard disk on a HP Pavilion dv4000 Notebook PC. When I bought it, Windows 7 (update) was installed. I have the Product Key and DVD for w7 update, and product key for Windows XP, but no XP CD/DVD. Is it possible to install Win7 update on the new HD?

I have the Product Key for Windows7 (as well as the DVD to 'upgrade 3 PCs for a special price') and product key for Windows XP. Do I need to have the original XP CD or Restore CD to install Win7 (upgrade, nor full OEM version) on the new HD? Is there any information that I can add to make this an more clear? I no I would be far better off to buy a new laptop, considering the age of the hardware, but that is not currently inthe budget.

It should be possible. You should search a free toll number for your country to ask Microsoft about this situation. Also you can take out your old hdd and use Ghost to mirror it on the new hdd :) - you just clone the old hdd

SOURCE: installing windows on acer notebook help

The problem most likely - the laptop is old and the BIOS most likely cannot support a hard disk with a capacity of 120Gb.
Check the capacity of the old hard disk, most likely it is about 10 to 20Gb in size and you cannot buy one these days with these capacity.

First thing that comes to mind is have you downloaded all of the updated driveras from the manufacturers web site? Most apps won't work unless you do.
Have you downloaded all the Windows updates?

Let us know what the OS is and then we will be in a better possition to advise.

Loud humming noise, then went away. hp told me to remove hard drive then reinstall, now have no bootable device message???

your hard drive has died. replace hard drive and re-install operating system.

hard drives only last up to 5 years. guaranteed to fail eventually.

Can i upgrade my Ram and hard disk in my HP pAvilion dv4000?

according to the specs you can install up to 2 gb of memory and the manual states that a 100 gb hard drive was an option. not sure if you can go higher then that.

Please take a moment to rate this solution thanks

Black screen

This model has built in multimedia that does not need the operating system (or hard disk) to play movies and music. So it probably is a bad hard drive. Laptop HDs are notorious for failure. That being said, it doesn't take an expert to replace a hard drive and reload the OS and you can get one pretty cheap (<$50) on eBay. DO NOT get a Hitachi or IBM though - my pref is Western Digital or Fujitsu. You will also need the OS disks which you may not have as many systems are putting the install disks on the 1st HD sector. You can usually order disks cheap from HP if you have your purchase info. If you can downlaod and burn an iso image to CD from another computer, the "Ultimate Boot Disk" (search Google) is a great free testing CD.

When starting my DV4000 - the screen is dark other than a cursor in the left corner.

That error indicates a hard drive problem. You probably have to replace the hard drive.
