Laptop plugged in not charging:

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.

2. Make sure the IBM ThinkPad X40 power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.

3. Make sure the DC jack is not loose or broken. A loose DC jack will need to be re-soldered. A broken one will need to be replaced.

4. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.

5. The power button could be bad

6. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced.

Why plugged in not charging

Is the computer at full charge (or at least 90%) prior to the attempt to charge it? I know that my Lenovo is set to not charge from 90% in order to keep the battery from overcharging.

Plugged in but not charging

How old is the laptop? Batteries only last for so long. Try this:
1. Remove the battery from the laptop.
2. Plug it back in.
3. Try to charge.
4. If still does not charge, replace battery.

Plugged in, Not Charging

first thing you should check is the AC Adapter voltage output and Amperes that your computer requires.

if all ok, try this:plug in your AC adapter to your computer in a switched off position. wait for an hour or two then turn on your pc and check whether the battery has been charged or not. if not, then the battery is gone but if it's been charged and drains so fast while the computer is on then you should buy a new battery.
