The protection diode (a black, tub looking devise) hooked to the positive power wire near the back of the radio, is most likely your problem. Check to see if any doides are shorted by using a Volt/Ohm Meter by checking for a short. For more imformation or help, email me at wyoed1@aol.com.

Capacitor C-82, which connects the output of the driver to the input og the final, is leaky or shorted, putting +12 volts on the base of the final, which blows it immediately.

Open the case on your radio. Solder a 100 ohm resistor between the pa jack and ext speaker jack. You can add a switch if you like to turn it on and off. The lower the resistance, the louder the talkback.

1 why would you change the finals?? Have you checked you antenna? How are your SWR's? Crappy antenna's cause a lot of problems.

Use an external meter to see what the SWR is, and see what the output is PEP. If its low, then there is something wrong. If it is High, change the mic and turn up the dynamic all the way.

Next. Have you been messing around in there?? Tryin to get more wattage? You turned VR4? If you thought you were turning it up by turning it all the way to the right, you turned it all the way down. Turn it all the way to the left.

What size fuse is used in COBRA 29LTD CLASSIC radio.

First question should be, what happened to the last one? If the fuse blew on you, you need to find out why. If it was just missing when you got the radio...

That said it is surprising that the manual doesn't state this value directly. However, it is a 4W transmitter and the manual I referenced states that you should connect to an "accessory" fuse for mobile installation. My car has a 10a fuse in that position but a 3A slo-blow in the power wire's inline fuse holder should do the trick. (The main reason for using the "Accessory" fuse is for operation with the engine off, but not battery drain unless the key is inserted.) Another clue for my SWAG is that for a "base station" installation, the manual recommends a 12Vdc power supply that can deliver >2A... So I think we are in the ballpark.

If you have lost your original manual you can get a replacement from the Cobra support site here:

Where and what does the fuse look like for the Cobra 29LTD Classic, and is there a fuse #.

Hi, my name is John. Welcome to Fixya. You should find the fuse inside the fuse holder located on the red wire going to power source. Push and turn counter-clockwise to expose the fuse. the number and amps are stamped on the end of the fuse. Thanks for choosing Fixya.......John

CB keeps blowing fuses

There are a few common reasons the fuse keeps blowing:

1. The transmitter final transistor is bad, it usually is directly connected to the 12v source and not switched by the power switch.
2. The power wires were accidentally reversed I.E. positive to ground, neg to 12v. There is a protection diode on the circuit board that did its job and is now shorted. it will keep blowing fuses until its replaced.

In most cases just turning up VR4 is more then enough. Replacing the final, tr14 with another transistor requires changing many more parts to get it to work.

With a new 29, there is no need to change the final. Just turn vr4 all the way up and you will see around 20 - 25 watts. L13 won't gain you a single watt. L12 will raise the dead key, and usually you want a lower dead key for good swing. L14 will gain you a few watts, but don't adjust this unless you have a watt meter. You turn it out to increase wattage, but too much will over bias the final and shorten its life.

You hook it to a watt meter with a dummy load. Then say a steady AHHHH into the mic while keyed. Turn the slug out until the needle stops going up, then back it down to where it stopped.

The easy thing to do, and you will be pleased is just to turn VR4 up. Now, Up is counter clockwise. Its a variable resistor, so the less resistance, the more modulation. So you want to turn the VR down.

that will be more then enough.
