You don't specify what make the VCR is! Could it be an analogue machine? And if you are in the UK all the analogue stations have been switched off! So there's no signal! For the VCR to operate you need to connect it to a second digital box and record the box signal via a scart lead with the video set to AV setting. Some digital boxes have two tuners and will put out a signal for both the TV and VCR.

The VHS cleaning cassette possibly deposited fiber in the heads in the drum. You may need to open the cabin and examine the heads and the mechanism for foreign matterial.

Press the Channel up & down buttons at the same time and on most VCRs this deactivates auto tracking option. then press the up or down channel button to adjust tracking. You might try this first. pressing them both at same time reactvates auto tracking. This might not solve the problem but at least you eliminated one possibility.

SOURCE: tv/digital converter box & vcr-dvd hook-up

I have a vhs and dvd player all in one
I have a converter box hooked up to my tv and vcr , dvd player combined
I can play my movies on the tv. ok.
you have to have your tv and vcr set on channel 3. if that is what your main tv is set up with. Or 4 if you have your tv set up with that.
Mine plays ok. My settings are for channel 3
My suggestion would be to check your hook ups. maybe they are not hooked up correctly
I had to go to www.google.com and did searches to help with hook up.
I can also record station I am watching with vcr on vsh tapes. I do not have a dvd recorder.
I found out that you have to have 2 converter boxes hooked to one tv., in order to record on on station while watching another. I have not tried that, as I don't have 2 converter boxes for one tv. I found that by doing google search also. Good Luck

I DID NOT USE MY TVR460 VIDEO CAMERA FOR 3 YEARS. NOW IT IS NOT RECORDING OR PLAYING ANY TAPE. IT CAN RECORD AND PLAY ONLY ON SONY MEMORY STICK.

Recording / Playback head is metal with a thin gap which quickly becomes corroded from simple condensation - unless stored with water absorbent material in airtight container. Sorry, (you needed a newer model anyway) ;-'

Image distorted on panasonic nv-fj620

I can't say for certain but it sounds like the video head might have gone. The good news is that you can get the parts from Curry's Partmaster website. Perhaps cheaper elsewhere? The bad news is that video heads are not cheap!

I don't know how you cleaned the head. So I would advise trying again to make certain. I would recommend cleaning with Servisol Video 40 several times. If that still doesn't work I would assume the head to have gone.

When I record a movie on the vcr it plays back snowy.

Ur VCR signal recorded free air throught an DTV converter box?Yes,this cause is normal, because VCR player have no digital tuner on the VCR player by itself,on it circuitries design. If recorded throught pay cable signal.Yes,than ur VCR video head player is dirty needed to be clean.Tries websites like Amazon.com,Ebay.com to buy a VCR video head cleaner vdeo tape.Just play it as normal as a video tape, when the video head clean,VCR will display clean head eject tape now.

Colored, pixilated bars appear during playback

It is very common when the magnetic heads got dirty. Buy a Mini DV cleaning tape, follow the instruction clean the heads by playing the cleaning tape for a while. Record NEW video and playback to test.
Please know if you play the old video recorded buy the dirty heads, you may not get clear picture, because here is not correct data recorded on the tape.

Cleaning witha wet tap cleaner, when it should be dry!!!

"Cleaning with a wet tape cleaner" begs even more questions.  What did you use as a cleaning agent, and how long did you run the tape?  Your answer should be "100% pure alcohol" and ran it for no more than 10 seconds.  If you ran the tape too long you may have worn down the heads.  If this is the case, throw the camera out.  If you used something other than alcohol, or too much, you may have damaged the pinch rollers.  My suggestion is to open the tape door and leave open in a warm dry area for a day or two to reduce moisture.  Then insert an tape which was not damaged and see if you can record and playback.

Incompatible Tape

try a cleaning tape first - best not to rewind the cleaning tape because it will put back the crud previously removed ? into your heads and guides ( last tape to play is prime suspect ) ; - - digital heads wear faster than analog so a new set of heads is next possibility but if the cleaning tape works . . . retire your library soon as possible .

Tapes won't play

This is an indication that both data heads are dirty. In a digital camcorder both heads need to be operating correctly to obtain a full picture. Insert a new cleaning tape and run it for only 10 seconds or less, this should clear up the problem. Avoid using the tape that caused the problem. Do not use the cleaning tape for regular maintenance, this will damage the drum surface. Good luck to you! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (customelectronics.org)

Playing the tape is choppy

You didn't say whether you tried cleaning the heads or not. This sounds like the problem you get when the video head can't read the information continuously. If you are capable of cleaning the heads with the proper cleaner (not a tape, they don't work) I would suggest trying that first. If you are not capable take it to a repair shop. The video head assembly is very fragile and can be broken very easily if you don't know what you are doing. They should be able to clean it for about $50.00 US. Good luck.
