Question about Hoover S3765-040 WindTunnel Bagless Canister Vacuum

1 Answer

Carpet power head will not stay attached to telescoping wand

The main carpet power head falls off the wand when I pull up or back while carrying the machine or vacuuming. I had this problem the first time I used it new, but it seemed to be fine when I pushed the wand firmly into the neck of the carpet attachment. It seems that the pin does hold tightly enough. It was fine for quite a while but now it falls off consistently and drives me crazy.I think it is still under a year old.

To answer your last statement, if you do not have a receipt, the warranty will go by the date ofyour serial number. the first 4 digits are the month and year. this model usually has a 1 year wty. the wand button may not be protruding as far due to dirt under the metal band. however you may still have an issue with the neck on the powerhead which will require shop service.

Do you hate vacuuming stairs?

  • If you have stairs that at have carpet you should vacuum them.It is difficult with most any vacuum. I recommend that for people that are using a canister vacuum ; this is the one you pull around with you on a hose.I recommend taking the handle out of the wands and plugging it directly into the power nozzle. The power nozzle is the piece that has the roller bar in it or some people call it a beater bar! If you remove the wands from the equation you will find that you have much better control of the pwr.head. This will allow you do do a better job and not have to stand back five feet from the head and on stairs you will find this to be much more convenient. If it is to short then you may try using just one of the wands if they come apart. Some now have telescopic wands that you can pull out just like a telescope does again you have moved three feet closer to the task at hand and thus making it easier to control the head.
  • For people that have an upright machine; I recommend getting what is called a sidekick or a rug rat. These are little mini power heads that are run on the airflow of your vacuum. They attach on to the hose and you can get right non the stairs with it and it is very light and versatile. You can even vacuum your mattress with it or your car. The rug rat is sold by most vacuum stores and are compatible with almost all machines.
  • I hope this makes life a little easier .
  • Good luck and thanks for reading my tip!

I think the power head is clogged with pine needles. The carpet head is not picking up. How do I open it to clean it out?

Make sure you have suction at the end of the hose. If not, the clog is most likely in the hose. Detach hose from vacuum and wand. Drop a coin into one end and allow it to fall through. If it doesn't drop out, the clog is definitely in the hose. Then visually check the wands for a clog
Disassembling the power nozzle is not necessary, or recommended. First, ensure the clog is in the power nozzle. Drop a coin in the wand end and see if it falls out. If not, the clog is elsewhere. You should be able to clear the power nozzle by disconnecting the wand. Use the handle of a table knife to try to push the clog back through the power nozzle, toward the brush. If that doesn't work, try using long nosed pliers to clear the clog.

Vacuum not picking up dirt

The neck in your power head is likely clogged. Disconnect from the wand and look inside. Also check the wand.Since you have suction on the bare floor the hose is likely not blocked.

The carpet brush attachement loses power while vacuuming

I have seen this many times. It is either a bad connection or a break in the wire. Turn it on and flex the wire and connection until you can reproduce it dependably. Then you will know what it is and where.
It is very aggravating. You need to fix it soon, before you take to jumping up and down on it and bust the wand and the power head also.

Carpet attachment

Check the plug ends at the top of the wand and the plug going into the hose handle, also at the bottom of the wand. It sounds like they may be burnt, if so they will need to be replaced. One cause of these connections going bad is not turning the power head off when connecting or disconnecting. Therre are other causes, the switch in the handle is going bad, also some of these cannisters have a relay mounted by the vac motor, sometimes they go bad.

Power brush problem

Check the contacts where the power head attaches to the wands and also where the wnd attaches to the hose. If any of the contacts look burnt, then they will need to be replaced. Unhooking them when power is on is what causes most of these problems. But if they look ok, could be a problem inside the power head, or in the circuit board that is inside the cannister.

Losing power to stick/floor vacuum

if you have an extension wand, the replacement will cost about $100.00. there is a way to repair both the pwr-cord on the brush assemble and the wand, but it depends on how much damage there is. also you need to check the contacts where the wand connects with the handle, and the prongs on the handle.

Lack of Suction

There are actually several possibilities.

Check to make sure that the brushroll is spinning. The brushroll is responsible for virtually all of your pickup on carpet, and is the culprit for most complaints of "lack of suction."

If the brushroll is not spinning, listen at the head to see if the motor inside the power head is active. If you can hear it running but the brushroll is not turning, you have a broken belt. If the motor in the power head is not turning at all you may have an electrical short in the hose, the wands, or the main power outlet from the body of the canister; but before you get too involved check the power head for a thermal reset button. Some of the Electrolux powerheads are equipped with these, and some are not, so check your user's manual. If there isn't one, or if it isn't tripped, you'll need to look for electrical issues.

In this particular model it is fairly common for the electrical contacts on the wands to short out, so inspect the metal contacts to look for scorching, or melting of the plastic around them. If you have access to a VOM, check for voltage at the contacts on the end of the wand, and if it is not present, check all of the contacts sequentially back to the canister body to determine which part is not passing voltage. If you have voltage all the way through the wand, you either have a loose connection inside the power head, or the power head motor has burned out. If you have power from the canister body, but not through the end of the hose, either your hose has a short in it, or the circuit board in the handle assembly that controls the power head power has shorted out.

If your brushroll is turning, then you do, in fact, have a clog somewhere inside the power head, which a visual inspection behind the brushroll and into the elbow will confirm.

Best of luck,

-R
