Whirlpool Ice Maker Won't release ice

12 year old Whirlpool side by side with ice maker, water feeds, ice makes but won't harvest. I removed the ice maker, cleared ice, reinstalled, motor turns gear, arm goes up and then water feeds in. I'm thinking thermostat may be bad. I removed the thermostat and connected a VOM while putting it in ice water then in hot water. The change is from 4.4 megohms to 1.8 megohms. I was thinking it acts more like a switch. open or closed. Checked heating element, not open.
Your advise?

Jetguy77,

I have a 1993 year (16 years old now) Whirlpool side-by-side with icemaker, Model ED22PW. I have had similar problems with the icemaker - water goes in, freezes, but ice does not eject from tray. It has happened to this unit 2 times since 1993. It turns out the problem is not the thermostat. It is the icemaker motor module. The icemaker has a small synchronous (clock) motor that rotates the ice ejector. When it goes bad, the ejector does not rotate, either because the module timer had failed or the motor itself has failed. The solution is to go to your nearest applinace parts dealer and by a new "icemaker motor module" for Whirlpool Model (your model here). Mine cost $58.85 the last time I replaced it in 2006. To install the new module, you will need to remove the icemaker from the refrigerator. Mine has 3 screws that attach it to the side. Also unplug the power & control cable. The water tube slides out when you pull the unit forward. When you get it out, it is then easy to remove the motor module and insert the new one. You may have to reset the timer on the module to get the tray to fill completely.

PS: It requires a tremendous force to push the ice out of the tray. The motor apparently becomes weak, so that it still turns when there is no ice, but once the ejector levers contact the ice, the motor stalls. The solution for me was a new motor module.

My icemaker will no longer make ice. It just stopped all of a sudden. I checked the manual for troubleshooting and it still will not make any ice. Whirlpool Gold (Conquest) Side-by-Side

Good day,
If the freezer is working at it's normal temperature then follow this procedure to get the ice maker up and running.
First step is to take a small paper cup of water and fill the cavity until it is near full. With the ice maker turned on, close freezer door and wait 3 hours to see if it harvests. If not, the ice maker is bad, and must be replaced. If the cubes harvest then.......
Three possibilities.
1. The water supply from the house is not delivering water to the water valve. Shut off the house at the meter, disconnect the line going to the water valve, and with the line pointed into a bucket, have someone turn the valve back on for a 15 second count. The water should come out smartly. If not, the line and it's fittings will have to be replaced.
2. The fill tube from the back of the machine that feeds water into the back of the ice maker is frozen up. You will have to remove the ice maker to visually inspect that tube. If blocked, it needs to be defrosted, but use caution. Too much heat too fast will start to melt plastic and vinyl parts you don't want melted.
If this is the case, then once cleaned out, you will have to change the water valve located in the back bottom rear of the machine because it is leaking during the off cycle.
3. If everything checks O.K. up to this point, you will have to purchase and install a new water valve, and install it.
P.S. Under very rare occasions the electric circuity in the ice maker will fail to send a signal to the water valve. Although rare, it can happen, in which case the best option is to replace the ice maker and water valve.

Good day,
That might help, but it is better to follow a step by step process to solve the problem. Your solution, in a way is part of the process that follows.

My ice maker is not filling up with water preventing it from making ice. However we are recieving water from the door

Check the well in the ice maker to see if there is ice in it. If empty, with a small cup, pour water in the cavity until it is near full. With the ice maker turned on close freezer, and wait about 2 hours to see if it will harvest what you put in. If it harvests O.K..
then it is usually the dual water valve in the bottom rear of the machine, and will need to replaced.
2 exceptions. Rare but are possibilities. One. The fill tube that fills the ice maker has built ice up and will not let the water reach the ice maker. You have to remove the ice maker to inspect the tube, and if it's blocked with ice, must be defrosted but WITHOUT heat. A hair dryer or such will create havoc with the plastic parts. Two. There is a micro switch in the ice maker that can fail and fail to send info to the water valve to fill while it is going thru a harvest cycle. If it is exception One, the water valve still must be replaced as well, since it is leaking small amounts of water when the ice maker is off. If it is exception two, the ice maker must be replaced. These exceptions are rare but I've had to deal with them more than once.

Ice maker won't make ice

The water valve has 2 solenoids one for water and another for ice. The water solenoid is connected to a larger hose than the icemaker solenoid. The water solenoid is working but the Ice maker solenoid might be dead. BUT the ice maker might not be calling for water. It is the ice maker that powers up the solenoid to fill the ice mold. At the end of harvest a tiny copper plate mounted behind the main drive gear rubs across a copper contact. To tweek the amount of water a small screw is mount at the 3 oclock position of the ice maker head.HERE are some repair tips and photos

Icemaker wont make ice.

ICE MAKER 101

If the temp inside the ice box is 25f or less in the freezer the mold thermostat fires up the ice maker and it goes into harvest. At the end of the cycle it powers the water valve for 7 seconds. Either your water valve is bad or your ice maker. Keep in mind ice freezes at 32f but ice makers don't harvest till 25 f. If the coils beneath the box are a tiny bit dirty this could kill the efficientcy of the box.So make sure the coils are nice and clean. That in itself could make the ice production start again. reamore at the above link.

Ice maker not working

Hello.

First of all you need make sure that your freezer is freezing enough. Sometimes everything will seem to be freezing ok, but it won’t be cold enough to make the icemaker work. The best way is to squeeze your ice cream, if you have any that is.

Then you need to make sure that the ice level sensing arm is in the down/on position.
Also make sure that the ice bucket is positioned properly so as to trigger the ice bucket sensing switch.

If all of this checks out ok, let me know and I can guide you through an icemaker diagnosis by forcing it into a harvest mode.
