I have exactly the same problem. Our washer is 5 years old, the same model.
The wash came out suddenly with rusty stain a few days ago, and I have no clue what is causing this.
Does anybody have any idea why this happens?

My washer is about 9 years old and I have the same problem. It just started a few weeks ago. I have brown streaks and dots on my whites that will not come out. I have been told to buy AFRESH (homedepot has it) and run a few cycles with that. I usually only use cold water so I was told that with not using hot water and bleach that mold and other gunck build up happenes. So run it a few times on hot with bleach and also try the afresh. So much for having any clean whites for while until I can get the washer cleaned out. UGH!

My problem may be somewhat related. Some substance gets on my t-shirts and looks like very faint spots.

After been washed with detergent (Tide), the spot turns a much darker brown an it is impossible to remove!

I originally blamed my front loading washer, but I was able to replicate the problem by just soaking the shirt in detergent.

    Any ideas?

If it's gunk or build up the marks should wash away. In this case run a long cycle using "affresh" or "washer fresh" with an empty load and use the hottest water available to help rinse the gunk out.

If the marks do not wash away, it could be grease due to a bearing failure. Listen for loud growling or grinding either by spinning the drum by hand or putting it into a spin cycle. If this is the case, the rear tub assembly (contains bearing) will need to be replaced. Not much can be done about the ruined clothes :(

I had the same problem - white clothes (the only ones washed with hot water and bleach) stained with brown streaks, and mildew build-up on gasket. I used Affresh (both the tablet and the wiping cloth) then tried another white load and had the same problem, this time with stains also appearing in brown spots the same size and pattern as the drum. I used Affresh a second time then ran a couple of subsquent tests with a white rag and everything seems fine now.

Update: the Affresh solution did not work. When I next did a heavy load of whites the problem re-appeared. I then ran numerous tests on different cycles, different water temperatures, with and without detergent and fabric softener and discovered the one constant factor: the problem only happen on the Whites cycle (regardless of water temperature and use of detergent/softener). This makes sense because the very high speed spin in this cycle literally sucks (heavy loads of) clothes slightly into the holes in the drum and this is exactly where the stains appear.

I have therefore creted my own post to ask if there are any solutions short of taking the entire machine apart and cleaning the outside of the drum.

I have been having the same issue and the washer has been very loud during the spin cycle...it is definitely the bearing but boy are they expensive! Costing me $230 to fix, but they machine is still in great shape.

Check the dryer for the seal in front of unit. a bad seal could be causing your clothe to come out with stains in white. so determine if its coming from the washer or dryer because a lot of the times the seals on the 417 dryers will stain whites. the seal is located inside of the drum between front panel and drum glides. stick your head inside of drum and look to see if the seal is good or not. hope this helps.

Had the same problem with maytag maxima. After running one affresh cycle, we could piles of brown flaky slimy bits in the tub. Figured it was the enzymes of the dish washing powder(cheaper than affresh tabs) breaking down the waxy build up of cheap (everyone in the house buys their own) fabric softer in the tub lining. Ran the same cycle with a cup of powder each 4 more times before the flecks went away. Going to do the dish washing powder trick each week from now on.

Brown streaks on white cloths?

Hi Ralph,
It may be important to have an idea as to what caused the stain/discoloration. Carbona (http://www.carbona.com/home.php) has different products specific to the various reasons for the problem. You may be able to use bleach, depending on the fabric affected. Some white material turn yellow with bleach
Hope this helps ~ Good luck!

My Frigidaire FTF530FS Front Load Washer appears to be leaking oil and it is getting on my clothes

Hello Loree Grudem - This can be the result of the shaft bearing and seal. They may have become worn and the transmission oil is creeping up to get in your water. Once this happens, it gets on your clothes to cause staining. Or possibly you have a buildup of fabric softener that comes loose and puts a greasy like substance in your water and on your clothing. Once you put your clothes in the dryer and the old fabric softener melts you will see these spots. I suggest contacting a professional to move forward accurately.

Brown stains on white clothes in front loading washer

The brown stains are likely coming from the felt drum seal. The OEM adhesive is tar based - and after time and use - breaks down.

You'll need a new felt seal - and the adhesive that is used should be silicone based... eliminating the brown streaks.

I get grey stain/spots on my white cloths

This is from not enough HOT loads.

Fatty deposits gather between the basket and tub during COLD washes.

Then they are being released in large numbers when you do your whites on HOT.

It is recommended to do 1 HOT load per week.

Do an empty load with some degreaser added (like Goo-Gone) on the fullest/hottest setting you have.
