DVD R/RW does NOT work

I can Not open or play any CD's what so ever.
I need to be able to use this.
Can I do anything, (without needing to put a Disk in) to restore it?
How do I find out if it is defective or if I need a new one?

    A couple of questions:
    1) Is the drive getting power? Does the drawer open when you press the front panel button?
    2) Does Windows recognize the drive? Is it showing up when you double-click "My Computer?"

Since the drive is getting power (the drawer opens), it's either defective or has a bad data cable connection. Turn off the computer. Remove the cover from the computer (most eMachines cases have a slide-off side panel with a couple of thumbscrews holding it in place). Then make sure the data cable to the CD drive is firmly seated at both ends (the drive and the computer main board). Restart the computer. If Windows still doesn't see the drive you'll need to install a replacement.

What is the difference between a DVD+RW and a DVD-RW.

DVD-RW
It is the re-recordable version of the DVD-R. To use this type of media you will need to buy a DVD-RW recorder. The DVD-RW recorders usually record DVD-R, CD-R and CD-RW media, too. Similarly to what happens to DVD-R, DVD-RW disks can be played in newer commercial DVD players without any problems. Older commercial devices cannot recognize the media, refusing to play the disk. To play a DVD-RW disk, commercial players need the disk to be finished. After finishing the disk, you can only record new data in it by reformatting it, which makes you lose all the recorded data.

DVD+RW

It is the re-recordable version of the DVD+R and everything that was said about the DVD+R is valid for the DVD+RW. Only the newest DVD players play movies recorded in disks using this format. There are recorders on the market that can record both DVD-RW disks and DVD+RW ones. These recorders are called DVD?±RW. Similarly to the DVD-RW, the disk needs to be finished to be played in commercial DVD players, and to record new data in the disk after having finished it requires reformatting it, which makes all the data in it to be erased. DVD+RW recorders are usually capable of reading DVD-RW disks (but not of recording them) and vice-versa.

There you are.

Did you get the disk that was in the box? it should have Power DVD software in the box. (Mine did) are you using a windows operating system? The software included runs on windows only.

It doesnt read any dvd neither software nor video, but can read audio cds, vcds, and mp3s

Put a DVD disk into the drive.
Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for the CD/DVD drive.
Click "Explore".
If a window opens, then your hardware can read the DVD media.
If not, then you need to replace the CD/DVD drive.

Then, you need software, such as the _free_ 'VLC' software,
downloadable from the Internet, to play DVD-videos on your computer.

Writemaster DVD RW When CD inserted into DVD small lites flash but then stop and DVD does nothing. Will play anything?

The light is there to tell you that the unit has recognized the disk and is waiting you command. Just open My computer, right click on the disk icon and select play. If it says that it doesn't know how to do it it means that you need a media player capable of playing it. In that case Install VLC
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
and play the movie with it.

It won't read that there is a disk in the drive. When I put the disk in it makes a lot of noise and sounds like it's trying to start but in the end it quits and doesn't do anything.

If this happens even if you try to play several cds, then lens inside which reads the CDs needs cleaning. Try using a CD cleaner and let that spin inside the cdrom for like 30 seconds. Then try playing the a cd again. If it still fails to read them, you may need to manually clean the lens inside. Open the casing and unscrew the plastic plate the covers the lens. Get a q tip or a cotton bud and damp it with alcohol. Gently wipe the lens' surface and let it dry. Then return evrything back and try playing those discs again.

Hope this helps.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

GOOD LUCK AND DONT FORGET TO RATE MY POST!! :D

Why my [sony cd rw dvd rom] will not detect a blank dvd disk

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.

Sony DVD RW DRU-820A

HI,
Double check the Ribbon Cable Connector is installed Correctly ( 40-80 Strand IDE ) sometimes if these are not fitted squarely Or pushed in hard enough. Can cause a Problem.
Also try the emergency eject procedure on The Drive. Small jewellers screwdriver Or Needle, insert into the drives faceplate ( pinhole in drives faceplate drawer ) push to open dvd drawer. pull out drawer Gently. And push back in. This ocassionally works for a stcking Drawer/eject mechanism.
Finally try the drive without a disk in ( open/eject Or Close )

Blue Screen and Computer freeze after using Memorex CD-R & DVD RW

Is it possible to try this drive in another PC? My recommendatoin, if the drive performs to specs in the other PC, would be to perform a System Restore (not the XP one, but rather the one that uses the HP disks). If you do decide to do the restore, be sure to backup anything that is irreplacable as the restore will put your system back to factory settings. Good luck!
