there is a piece missing that holds the spool of thread in place on top,so the spool doesnt move

  • sylviaivie Jan 01, 2013

Is it the keeper disc that is missing? If so I would call your closest sewing place and ask them if they have spool keeper discs for sale. You might have to explain a little but i'm sure they have something that would work. In the mean time cut one from a Margerine lid, take a lighter and melt the edges, cut an x in the center and slide it on... hold that in place with a rubber band wrapped around the spindle several times, up close to the plastic disc.

A plastic bottle cap... like snapple might work ok too.. just make sure the edges are smooth.

SOURCE: need help to thread our sewing machine.

you really must get a manual for this machine.
You can find manuals online for a small price.
At one time some sites had them for free, but I haven't been able to find many recently. sewusa.com has some older ones for free. but not many. you could try the kenmore site as well, if not I'd try to search on dogpile.com (sewing machine manuals)
Just so you know, your manual is the MOST important tool for any sewing machine, and its worth a couple of bucks to get it.

How to thread kenmore sear roebuck sewing machine model 158. 1789181 got at auction no books

Sears carries a lot of manuals for their machines, although usually not free. In the meantime, there are many threading videos that demonstrate machine threading. Machines of similar models will thread similarly.

Probably best to raise the presser foot when threading so the thread will seat in the tension disk.

Before trying to sew, be sure to oil your machine with fresh, good quality sewing machine oil. Open the top, the side near the needle bar, and turn it on its back to get the underside. Place a couple drops of oil every place that metal rubs on metal. Adding hot air from a handheld hairdryer will make the oil effective quicker.

Be sure to install a brand new needle and use good quality thread--not old or bargain bin variety!

On the top left, there is probably a push button. This is the presser foot pressure adjustment. When the machine is stored, this pop-up button should be released (press down on the outer ring). Being stored with the pressure full on will eventually compress the spring that provides the pressure. Also, be sure to store the machine with the presser foot in the down position (preferably on a piece of scrap fabric). Avoid running the machine with the presser foot in direct contact with the feed dogs as this will wear the feed dogs and also create grooves in the presser foot.

How do I bring up the bobbin thread?

Place bobbin correctly into machine.
Thread machine correctly.
Hold thread tail coming from needle in your left hand while moving the hand-wheel towards you so that needle goes down and then comes up all the way.
Pull up on the thread in your left hand and "voila!", the bobbin thread is up.

How to put thread on a bobbin of a Kenmore Sewing machine

I could not find a guide for this model.

If there is a knob in the center of the handwheel, it needs to be loosened.

Take the thread from the spool around the first guide and then to toward the bobbin winder.

Run the end of the thread through an opening in the side of the bobbin spool.

Hold onto about 5" of the thread and place the bobbin spool onto the bobbin pin and move the pin to the right or the winding wheel to the left (depends on how your machine is designed).

Holding onto the thread end, press the power pedal.

When you cannot hold onto the thread any longer, stop the machine and cut off the thread end and then continue to wind the bobbin.

Disengage the bobbin winder (move the pin or the wheel back into place) and tighten the knob in the center of the handwheel before sewing.

Loading for winding or placing it into the bobbin case?

You can find a threading guide for this sewusa.com.

You may not find the exact model number as the diagrams provided may represent more than one model.

Problem of pulling the thread up from the bobbin place

I will be happy to resolve a tension issue with this machine but I need more information. I'm not sur ewhat you mean "hold the bobbin thread up well"

Manual can be ordered at www.sears.com or google kenmore owner's manuals and there are sites that you can download. I don't of any free ones though.

Threading the Bobbin

Place the bobbin in the bobbin case making sure the thread feeds clockwise. Draw the thread through the slot on the case. Continue to draw under the tension spring and through the opening pulling out about 6" of thread. Hold the latch open, position the bobbin case into the suttle and release the latch. THe case should lock into place when the latch is relaeased.

With the top thread, hold out about 5" to the left. While holding on tot he top thread, turn the hand wheel toward you and you should see a loop at the feed dogs. grab the two thread and bring them behind the presser foot.

I have a Kenmore as well ,I hope that this will work for you ,too bad that I don't live close to you otherwise I would give a hand. This is the way I fill the bobbin on mine. Mine is located on the top right ,I put the thread into the bobbin hole leaving a small piece of thread hanging for me to hold when I begin the winding, I pull the wheele out to stop the needle from moving while winding, when I am done just push it back in .I run the thread from the spool into the top left it looks like a U turn with a screw go around that without winding just pull it into the bobbin hole. press the foot control and it will begin winding .
