SOURCE: staple gun support

Know the types of staple guns available. They can be manual, electric, battery operated or run by compressed air with an air compressor. Some staple guns have guide wires because they’re used by electricians that can’t pierce wires. Others have long noses to work well in corners and tight spaces. There’s also a reverse built ergonomic staple gun called a "forward action" because the handle and the staple’s exit point are on the same end of the staple gun. Some staple guns can shoot brads instead of staples. Know how each type of staple gun works. This one is so simple because it works just like a stapler. You press and hold the silver latch on the back of the stapler to open the body. Take the tray out and fill it with staples. Then it’s ready to use. Just put the staple ejecting end on your piece to be stapled and squeeze it. There is also the forward action manual gun which is used by pushing the handle down, too. The handle is just located near the staple ejection site. Use an electric staple gun for effortless stapling. There’s no need to squeeze or apply any pressure on these guns. They come with a very short cord so you will always need to have an extension cord with your staple gun. You can also go with a rechargeable battery operated cordless staple gun. They are great but they do run out of steam so for long use one with a cord is better. They’re also pretty easy on the wallet these days, so there’s no reason to go without this in your home tool kit as it’s something that does a lot of jobs. Know the versatility of the staple gun. Whether you have a manual or an electric model, these are some of the most versatile tools out there. You can use them to recover furniture, to build a birdhouse, to staple lattice to a patio, to build lightweight projects like a small knick knack shelf and to do wiring work.

SOURCE: I have a very old Bostitch staple gun Model T5.

You should not need any tools to lift the guard/nose piece. The T5 nose piece cleary has engraved on it "Pull Up To Insert Staples". To remove old staples, use a pencil or similar rod to depress the hammer/striker above the staples while the nose is open.

SOURCE: how to remove jammed staples in staple gun?

Take out the small bolt that is secured with a nut at the back of the gun (at the end where you feed the staples) -- then drop the inset. Now you have access to the jammed area. Clear out jammed staples and put the stapler back together. Easiest way is to hold the nut and turn the bolt from the other side.

I have a pro shot electric staple gun. Where can I buy the staples?

I have an excellent AEG staple gun. Although the AEG name still exists the nails and staples have been discontinued and the aftermarket that usually delights in producing such things haven't been interested because the nail design only fitted a limited number of machines.

In all other cases in my experience those manufacturers of nail and staple guns (that still exist) continue to produce ammunition for them and aftermarket specialist suppliers will have adequate stocks, the main problem being their information is often incomplete or out of date.
In lots of cases the required staples will have been bought in by the machine manufacturer but given a none-generic type or part number which the aftermarket supplier won't recognise.

If you don't have the generic staple type or part number then careful measuring is required to match drawings provided by specialist aftermarket suppliers of which there are a few in the UK and I expect every country will have a number.
In addition most builder's merchants or good ironmonger's will stock a supply of the most popular types.

Need to know staple sizes

If you get the model number off of your staple gun you can cross reference that with the listings on the staples box. A lot of the staple guns will also have the replacement staple sizes right on the bottom of the gun.

The side of the staper lists 3 different staple sizes, does it really take all 3? (1/4, 3/8, 1/2 inch)

Samantha, Yes. These sizes are the lengths of the legs. They are all the same size wire, bent into the same width of "U". Yes, it will take all 3, but you have to buy the right type. When you buy staples, look for compatibility with this brand & model stapler. By the way, if you a stapling something thin to something substantial (such as paper to wood), use short staples. Otherwise you will have difficulty getting the staple to penetrate the wood sufficiently for the staple to lay flat. Good luck, Al K

Went to the local hardware and read the labels. The store brand fit and works as good as the original staples. The 1000 has outlasted several of the new fashion staplers. And the local hardware store is an Ace Hardware.

Staple Gun Troubleshooting

Most of the staple gun models lack an "anvil" — the metal plate with curved slots that office staplers use to bend the legs of the staple inwards and flattens them against the paper. Staples set with a staple gun retain their straight legs, and are held in place only by static friction of the legs against the compressed surrounding material, much like common nails. Indeed, some staple gun models can handle brads and nails as well as staples. Some staple guns also use divergent point staples where the legs twist as the staple drives into the surface providing superior holding power.
