Is the pilot flame impinging on the thermocouple almost to the point of wrapping around it ? do you have a vent cap onto of your vent? do you live in an area where you have high winds? try to adjust the TC so it gets more flame impingement, replace or install your venting cap, as far as the wind issue, finding a really good cap for your venting is essential, they do make caps that are made for high wind areas, hope that helped

It is a Williams circa 1985 gravity direct vent wall furnace mdel 30DV 5, 30,000 btu. Light pilot OK. Heat on OK. But when heat not called for (several hours) pilot must go out. There is a small penny...

That hole should only be a problem, if a strong draft comes thru and blows the pilot out. But that hole may also be for match lighting the pilot in an emergency. The older models like yours, had that feature. Check it closely, before you decide to block off the hole.

Hope this helped you.

I have a Williams wall heater at Sandiego home , a pilot lights ok ,I did change a themostat some time the burner come on , some time turn on thermostat a pilot goes out, please give me some help, thanks,

Hi,
The thermocouple is weak and does not hold the gas vlave on.
To get it to work right you need to change the thermocouple.
That is the metal rod that the pilot flame is hitting.

Williams 3003622 Wall Mounted 30,000 BTU The pilot light goes out when the main flame shuts down. The pilot light will stay lit for days when heat is not called for but when heat is called for the furnace...

I'm having the same exact problem... At first we thought was the vent... but the way the flames goes out... it seems that there is "not enough oxygen" more than "blown out by the wind"... right after both main & pilot goes out, I can't even light any external flame inside the chamber... and it doesn't feel like the outside cold air coming in... it just feel like there is some sort of gas in the chamber that's so strong, it prevents flame... and the only thing I can think of is that it doesn't have enough oxygen, but too much natural gas, and flame can't sustain.

I have Wiiliams direct vent wall furnace. I smell gas only when pilot is on and burner is not on. It does not smell when it is fully running (burner is on)

Dear Alex191: I am shocked and amazed that the Williams heater company is STILL knowingly and willingly selling faulty direct vent gas heaters. My problems took place in 1988! I bought a 30,000 BTU Williams DIRECT VENT from The Home Depot. I took the time to remove window sashes and run gas line to the Williams heater that I had placed in the window aperture. I was glad to finally have heat and be able to heat the area of the house where I stayed. Then I began to smell gas when the Williams was OFF. I traced it to the area where the pilot light gas tubing entered the combustion chamber. I removed the Williams unit and replaced it with an identical make and model and the SAME THING HAPPENED!!! I sat on my bed and almost cried. I had the gas company come out and they labled the problem as a "fuzz leak". The warranty repairman came out and had no idea what to do. Tightening the retaining nut did nothing. I called Williams and even back then they said that they were aware of the problem. They called me back and wanted to send me a part and asked me, "Can you work on it?" I returned the Williams and bought a Perfection-Schwank CONSOL heater that burns the air in the room and vents horizontally to a 4 inch vertical gas vent and was very satisfied with it. When they went out of business I bought an "Empire" brand gas heater. I don't know if I'll ever buy another direct vent heater from anyone. I will be glad to write an affidavit should you decide to suit the Williams company.

The blower is heat activated, it takes more than the pilot. If the burners are on, verify power to the unit.

Williams debonair wall heater + pilot light problems

THE flame from the pilot should shoot past the thermo-couple and heat this up and make a small amount of mili- amps to prove the pilot light is lit. ..So if the flame doesn,t go past the thermo-couple it won, make mili-amps or its tme to change out the thermo-couple, They only cost lest than $8:00 and you can change it!

Wall heater pilot light

As it turns out there is an emergency shut-off valve connected to the vent that was triggered by high winds. The reset button is hidden on the upper left hand corner of the unit (as you are facing it) behind a small grill on the side of the outer casing. Logic tells me that it's there so in the event of a clogged vent you don't fill your house up with carbon monoxide. One push on the reset button allowed the pilot to stay on and therefore the heater to fire up.

Unable To Keep Pilot Light Lit!

I have a Williams top vent gravity wall furnace (model 5009622) and I had the same problem. I had to take the cover off the furnace -- screw on top and two at the bottom (open the access door and there is one screw on each side) to get to the reset button for the vent safety shutoff system. On my furnace it's on the left side toward the top of the unit. I pressed the little red reset button and it's been working ever since. If your furnace is properly installed and doesn't have bird's nest in the chimney, it should work fine. Good luck!
