    I disconnected the the power to the kill switch, and checked for spark by turning the motor at the starter relay , Still no spark.

    A little history on how this started.We were mounting a rod holder on the boat rail at the left rear of the boat, and drilled into the power cable that feeds the lights ,fish finder ,etc.We had to replace the cable,as the cable melted before we could uncouple the battery.What parts could we have damaged??

    I was sussessful in removing the fly wheel nut by tapping on a short socket bar. I tried tapping a longer socket bar ,and as soon as I changed to the shorter bar the nut came off!!!

    Now I an having trouble removing the flywheel. I bought a harmonic balancer puller, but so far the flywheel will not pop off?/My fly wheel takes 1/4 By 20 threads bolts which did not come with the puller. The bolts are small , and I am afraid that they break off ???

    The fly wheel popped off .We used a 2lb BB hammer with a hefty 2 whackds . My helper was also prying up on the fly wheel with a pry bar . Npw how do I check the power pack to see if it is ok? This ia a 1989 model engine with the igni , module is under the fly wheel..

    The pry bar was just a large screw driver.The hefty swats with the BB hammer did the job !!!! --- I dis-connected the leads from the power pack to the charge coil, one of the leads attached to the charge coil fell into my hand /Maybe I found my no spark problem? I ordered a new charge coil today .I don;t have a peak voltage adaptor instrument so I am not sure the power pack is ok //

    No spark problem is solved .When we removed the flywheel we found one lead to the charging coil not connected .The power pack mounting screws were loose and contacting the fly wheel.The vibration between the two parts could have caused the loose coil wire? Any way we put it back together and it is working fine.!!! Thanks to everyone for your comments and support; Challe

Pull the stablizer pins and row back to shore, lol j/k. Did you check the linkage to make sure it was working properly, look on the motor itself not on the feel of it..

May likely be one of two problems:

1. Fuel flow: Make sure fuel tank vent is open and not blocked while engine running. Check primer bulb is working and no air leaks along hose anywhere. Check function of fuel pump and ensure fuel is getting to the cylinders.

2. Overheating: Check engine isn't overheating and that water pump is operating properly while engine is running.

creates an impulse to the cid as a magnet passes by . not much adjustment to timing small screw toward the front that moves the stator perhaps a 1/4 inch .

To get the year of Johnson and Evinrude outboards use the word "INTRODUCES". Each letter corresponds to "1234567890" respectfully. It's best to check with a model year reference book, but this motor's model number contains "CC" which would indicate it's a '88.

1968 evinrude starflite 100 hp no spark


Some of those had a battery ignition with a short cap and rotor, and some had a magneto which reached down into the bucket. Both had points and condenser like an old car. The cog belt location was critical. 2 teeth off and it would not fire. the key switch was wired diferently for each ignition system.

Hi have you tried it with the stop switchl/button disconnected, if so you have only got the stator under the flywheel left to replace, regards Phil.

Hi got a 1997 johnson outboard is a denso w24fsr spark plug ok for this motor cheers shaun


Stick with the NGK or try a Champion. A Johnson outboard is the only brand motor that will perform well with something besides a NGK.

Not ignition points as a set of breaker points as we know it.The timing is set from magnets set under the flywheel.Hope this helps

Ihave a 1991 70 hp Johnson outboard thats hard to start the first time but starts good after that. Seems to be flooded. Starting rpm seems to be low.
