I mean a SOUND CARD, not a DRIVER. Sorry, but that really didn't help.

Having problems with sound how could i get a sound card

I am assuming that right now you do not have a sound card (ie your speakers are hooked into the onboard sound on your motherboard). If you'e never installed a sound card, it sounds daunting, but it's actually pretty simple. Here's a link to a youtube video of someone installing a sound card.

You might be able to fix the problem by updating the drivers on your motherboard, without ever installing a new sound card. If the sound has worked in the past, and just stopped, then its more likely a driver problem than the need for a new sound card.

When installing a sound card in a computer that has onboard sound (Dell Dimension 2400) are there any cables that need to be connected to the new sound card? I have seen a sound card swapped out before,...

Only the cable to your speakers (external). However you should disable the on-board sound chip in the computer BIOS. Interrupt the PC bootup (F2 or Del, Whatever it says to enter "Setup", go to "on-board peripherals" and disable it there. Ian.

When I try and connect to skype or msm there is no sound from and it comes up with sound card needed

I would believe that your sound driver is not supported, if this is a new issue and it worked before maybe your sound card has become unseated if it is not integrated. If it is a new card try installing the newest drivers from the manufacturers web site.

How to upgrade the sound of my computer

If I got your questions clear it might be somethin like upgrading the sound driver of your sound card.
Changes to your operating system or new software may cause conflicts with your sound card or sound card driver. If the manufacturer of your sound card has created a new driver for it, you might solve the problem by installing it. You also might need to upgrade drivers to play sounds in new formats, such as RealAudio. This can only work for latter version of windows from 95 until present.
