Rheem gas valve for furnance

When pilot light goes out gas valve will not shut off for 30 seconds. this gas valve uses emergency cutoff running thru the limit switch back to the gas valve. i need to know if we can adjust time of cut out to zero seconds or if this gas valve is intentionaly set up this way?

It is intentional. It's a slow close valve. There is no adjustment. You can usually replace it with an instant open/close valve.

How do u light for hot water? 1992 bounder

Depends on the gas valve on the heater. Early models you have to use a match near the pilot light while holding the red button down. Continue to hold the red button down for 30 seconds or more. Slowly release the red button . If the pilot light goes out then replace the thermocouple. That looks like a small diameter copper tube that goes from the gas valve into the burner to make contact with the flame. If your heater has a piezo spark unit on it. you go thru the same as above but without the need for a match

U can light the pilot lite, turn 2 ON it will stay lit 4 a couple of minutes then go out? If u turn the knob 2 low, med. It goes out pretty much immediately?I changed the thermocouple, blew the lines ou

Is the thermocouple secure, routed properly, no kinks, no sharp bends? Is the end of the unit properly aligned so the hottest part of the pilot flame is hitting the unit. Did you hold pilot switch in the light position for at least 30 seconds, before you set the gas valve to on? If all above OK, try this. Light the pilot using barbeque lighter once it lights keep the lighter on the t-couple for 30 seconds, then set the valve to ON and keep the lighter where it is. Once the main burner lights, remove the lighter. If the burner and pilot go off, your gas valve is bad.

Under the gas valve is a removable panel. On models of that era there should also be a second panel behind the first. remove both.

the pilot light should be clearly visible.

If no pilot, turn the gas valve to OFF. wait 60 seconds. locate the tubes from the gas valve to the pilot location. turn the valve to pilot, and with a long match or grill lighter lit, place flame at the pilot location and press down on the pilot button beside the main valve.

pilot should light. If not shut off the gas and call a technician. If yes, hold the pilot button for 60 seconds, then slowly release. Pilot should stay lit. If not, shut off gas and replace thermocouple, start relight sequence over. If pilot stays lit, replace inner cover and adjust temp to 120 deg. If heater fires up, replace outer cover. Done.

If heater does not light, replace gas valve or entire unit. Water heaters have a limited life expectancy, and if my recollection is correct your unit is 10yrs past warranty.

Rheem water heater pilot lite stays lit, burner goes out

Tripped FV or TRD, or bad gas control valve, low gas pressure, air in gas line.

Unfortunately, Rheem does not post service manuals. Other companies post service manual, but only Rheem uses TRD FV system, while other companies use arrestor screen.

Believe I need to buy a Rheem Water Heater Thermocouple. Where do I find them?

If thermocouple is from ordinary tank-type water heater, then it is a generic part with different lengths 15" 17" 21" 24" 30" available at hardware of home center.
I suggest reading manual for installation information, advisories, and required maintenance.

http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html#clean

There are good utube videos on replacing thermocouple.
Tip of thermocouple has to be positioned in the pilot flame.
The heat on tip of thermocouple causes millivolts of electric current that travel back to the gas control valve and the electrical signal causes gas control valve to keep gas flowing down the pilot tube to the pilot light.
If pilot light blows out or if pilot tube is clogged and needs to be cleaned, or if gas valve has gone bad, then tip of thermocouple cools down and electric signal back to gas control valve causes gas control valve to shut off gas going to pilot.

When attaching thermocouple to gas control valve, it is finger tightened.
Be careful and do not cross-thread thermocouple. Just use your fingers to start the nut.
Finger-tighten thermocouple and then add 1/4 turn using small wrench.
The end of thermocouple has a small piece of insulation that isolates the electric current from body of gas control valve. If thermocouple is overtightened, the insulation is crushed, and electrical current millivolts short out and no signal reaches gas control valve, so gas control valve keeps gas turned off to pilot tube.

I have a Goodman gas furnance. The furmance kicks on the glow rod lights and then the furnance shuts down after about 60 seconds it goes through the same cycle. The burners never come on. What's wrong?

Gas valve is not kicking in or gas shut offs are off. Can you check voltage where 2 wires connect to gas valve. Can you see blinking lights thru lower door window and count blinks. Code sticker should be on inside of lower door.

AFTER LIGHTING MY RICHMOND 6G40-36F1 WATER HEATER IT LIGHT FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THE FLAME AND THE PILOT LIGHT GOES OUT. WHAT CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN?

There is air in the gas line. The best way to get the air out, is with the gas on, loosen the nut that attaches to the gas valve and make sure you can smell a little gas, then reattach the gas line, making sure everything is tight, and then relight the pilot making sure to hold the pilot light button down for at least 1 minute. Water heater pilot

This is more than likely the thermocoupler. The thermo Coupler is a solid cylinder shape with a point on one end and a thick aluminum wire on the other the tip is situated so that it is in the pilot flame. When it reaches a certain temperature from the pilot it sends a signal for the gas valve to stay open and keep the pilot light. If it does not send the signal the valve closes and shuts the gas off for safety. Solution first make sure you hold button long enough to heat Thermocoupler (about 30 sec) if pilot still goes out then replace Thermocoupler. Can purchase at most hardware stores and all plumbing shops.
If this has been helpful please select a rating. Good Luck and have a Grt Weekend.

Pilot light wont lit up

Change The Thermostat Cause If Your Getting Gas But The Water Heater Doesn't Detect The Heat It Will Close The Valve. When Lighting You Hold The Button Down For About 30 seconds so the thermostat will detect flame and stay lit. Check To Make Sure The Thermostat Is Where It Should Be. Heres A Picture Of What It Will Look Like.
