Question about Cameras
If you have the manual that came with the camera it should contain the correct procedure, otherwise go on line with Canon and put in your model number and ask for a user's manual!

A dead camera is impossible to tun diagnostic checks on without specialist tools, so yes, your camera will need to go to a Canon service centre for diagnosis and an estimate. If you decide not to go ahead with the work then you'll be charged for return shipping and a fee for the work carried out to make a diagnosis.
If the warranty expired fairly recently, then it may be worth contacting Canon before getting the estimate: it's not unknown for them to offer goodwill repairs for major faults which occur prematurely, but you need to be aware that your model was only designed with an approximate four year minimum lifespan.

Look closely at the cf pins inside of the camera. They are usually the problem when you get that error message. I am a Canon repair tech and have fixed three today alone this is a common thing. Look closely at the cf card eject button as well. Sometimes that comes loose and then the card will not seat properly! If you want I can take some pics of what they should look like with the mainboard out of the camera so you can get a idea of what they look like when they are bent and not bent and post them.

'Error 99' indicates some problem with
the AF contacts. This is a common error in Canon lenses. It could
indicate a very simple problem like dirty contacts or a much serious
one like the breakage of USM cable.
As a first step, you can try cleaning the lens and body contacts (the metal contacts between the lens and body) using a pencil eraser. Be careful to hold the body facing down so that no dust falls inside. After cleaning both the lens and the body contacts, re-attach the lens and try shooting. If the AF does not work still, you need to take the lens to an authorized service center.
