Yes. You may want to look for an adapter to connect it as USB device. This will bypass any OS problems and BIOS setups.

Remove the drive from your old laptop. Order a Sata to Sata/Ide hard drive adapter or a Sata wire with a usb connector from a place like Tiger Direct or Staples. Plug in the Sata wire into your drive (It is the only wire you need to make the hookup complete) then check to stt if Windows 7 recognizes the drive. If not you will need to get some software (downloadable and usually free) that will transfer files between operating systems.

Western Digital My Book hard drives use USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 speeds to transfer data from the hard drive to the computer and vice versa. When your My Book external hard drive is not performing properly or not turning on, you can troubleshoot the problem before sending the hard drive back to the manufacturer. Correctly powering up and installing the My Book are essential for transferring information and avoiding corruption.

Run your fingers up and down the power cable that connects to the back of the My Book hard drive and the wall outlet in your home. Feel for breaks or tears on the cable and replace the cable if needed. Check the pin on the back of the hard drive where the power cable meets the drive. Make sure the pin is straight and will make contact with the power cable properly. If the pin is bent, send the hard drive to Western Digital for repair. Plug a different device into the power outlet you are using to make sure it works properly. Use a device that you know powers on correctly. b> Slow Transfer Rates b> Open your computer's tower and check over the PCI adapter card that gives you the ability to achieve USB 3.0 speeds. Make sure that the adapter card is installed correctly per your manufacturer's installation manual. If the PCI adapter card is not installed correctly, you will not be able to transfer data in the 3.0 speed. Disconnect any other external hard drives connected to the system. When two hard drives are connected via USB, they share the transfer rate bandwidth and slow your transfer speeds down. Run a Windows Update to change the USB driver on your computer. Click "Start" then "All Programs" and then "Windows Update." Run the update and choose your correct USB 3.0 driver from the list. Click "Install" at the bottom to install the driver. Hope this helps.

Need to download data from old computer but need new power unit(bestec) computer 2003-5 vintage. have new windows7 how do I donwnload data from old computer

If your old computer is not working then remove the hard drive from the computer and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Plug this USB adapter into the USB port of your new computer and it will see the USB adapter with your old hard drive as an external storage device. You can then open the various folders and files and copy them to your new computer.

No operating system found

it mean your operating system is corrupted or your hard disk is not detected with machine

for operating system re install your operating system and if you face any trouble to installing operating system like hard disk not found or no drive.

so go to setup and check that if there showing any hard drive.
absoultly not so plug your data cable and power cable properly on your hard disk and re check now if problem is not solve yet. so now pull out your hard disk from pc and plug the both wire of power and data and now check that your hard disk is running making some noise you can feel that its running if not so replace your hard disk card and now plug it on pc it will running now and install your operating system . you can operate your pc with your old data. thanks

My Dell PC scan says that my Samsung SP2504C hard drive is about to fail and should be replaced. Is this something I can do?

Replacing the hard drive involves the following process:
  1. Turn off and unplug the computer
  2. Remove the two screws from the left panel (facing the front of the tower)
  3. Slide the left panel back and to the left to remove it
  4. Unplug both power and data from the hard drive
  5. Unscrew the hard drive (You may need also remove the right panel to get to additional screws)
  6. Slide hard drive out
  7. Slide in new hard drive.
  8. Screw in new hard drive in approximately the same fashion as previous hard drive was screwed in
  9. Plug in power and data
  10. Re-install panel
  11. Plug computer in and boot

However, if this is your main or only hard drive, you will need to install your Operating system and all of your software and files from scratch. It may be possible to preserve them, but that's often risky and requires a bit more work. If this is your main hard drive, you probably want to consult an expert on having the old drive contents moved to the new drive.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

You maybe able to retrieve data from this hard drive by connecting it to an USB hard drive adapter. Then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. If the hard drive is OK then this computer will see the adapter as an external hard drive and you can open the folders and files and copy them to the computer's hard drive or to a USB flash drive.

The Coolmax adapter is an USB hard drive adapter that can connect various types hard drives to your computer. This is used for testing and and transferring data to and from hard drives connected to the computer via the computer's USB port.

This Coolmax USB hard disk adapter can connect a 2.5-, 3.5- and 5.25-inch IDE or SATA hard disk to a PC. The black adapter box connects the hard disk, while the secondary power plug/adapter powers the drive. In the case of smaller notebook or SATA disks, the power cable is plugged directly into the adapter (as opposed to straight into the IDE hard disk).
The red USB cable, meanwhile, can be used to power hard disks directly from the host PC's bus via another USB port.

Connect the hard drive to the adapter as detailed above, power up your computer and plug the Coolmax USB cable into the conputer's USB port. The computer will detect and see this as an external drive, most likely as a E drive (the next drive letter that is available). Click on this drive and open to open the folder/s where your data is stored then select the folder/s and/or data and copy them, then open the hard drive on the computer and paste the folder/s and/or files onto the new hard drive.

Here is what you need. Go to a computer retail shop or get it online. You need an IDE / sata USB adapter cable. Here is what it does....you take the hard drive out of the damaged computer and attach the adapter to it, the other end is a USB plug that attaches to tyour good computer. Your good computer will read the drive on the usb cable and treat it as an external hard drive that you can copy and paste till your heart's content. The adapter dell for around 20-35 bucks. It is the safest way to transfer all your documents, favorites, nusic, Etc from the old system.

I have a external hard drive and i was using it tonight and all of a sudden it just stopped working

Hi,

First thing you need to do is to determin if the drive is working or not.

Either the drive itself failed or you did not stop your external hard drive safely in your PC or Macintosh before unplugging either the power or data cable.
1: Determine if the drive itself has failed
For purposes of testing, connect the power adapter directly to the wall. If you do not hear or feel the drive spin up when you connect the power, the drive will need to be replaced. If the drive spins up, but nothing shows up in My Computer or in Disk Management, change the USB cable and connect the new one to another port on your Computer. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Management, try the drive on another PC to see if it shows up on that computer. If that computer still does not detect the drive by showing you the system tray icon or by listing the drive in the Device Manager after you plug in the drive, the drive is bad and needs to be replaced.
If you require data recovery services on your failed drive, here's a list of authorized preferred data recovery partners
If you find that you do need to replace your drive, here's a link to WD to replace it.How can I replace a product under warranty?

2: Determine if the drive can be used again
If the computer does detect the drive, you can test the drive by using WD's Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. For more information on how to use the software to test the drive, Click here: How to test a drive for problems using Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics
Now If the software reports an error for the drive, you will need to look up what it means here: Data Lifeguard Tools 11 Error Codes .
If the software shows no errors for the drive, and you do not wish to send the drive for data recovery, you can partition and format the drive so you can use it again. For step by step information on how to format the drive click below:
IMPORTANT: To avoid corrupting or losing the data on your external hard drive you should always shut down the drive correctly before you disconnect the data cable from the drive or computer, or the power connection from the drive or the wall outlet.

I hope this helps and Good Luck!
