The light from DVD laser has a smaller wavelength (640 nanometers) than the light from the laser in a CD (780 nanometers)
A DVD/CD player has different laser beams. So if one is damage, the other can still function. In your case, the DVD laser beam/lens is probably damaged. It is hard to repair the problem and DVD reader/writers are cheap these days that it is better to get a new than to repair your old one.

If its making noises that you havent heard before and you can't get it to read any cds your putting in there then the drive is definitely bad and needs to be replaced.

I ran into the same problem and found a program on www.download.com Type dvd repair, this program will fix most issues and worth saving on a flash drive, or hard drive for future repairs.
