a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Go to this link. In the search window in the center of the screen, type "drpd setup" and click on the Search button. Select the option "How do I set up DRPD". You should see step by step instructions to set it up.

It is your phone answering machine that must pick up in three rings or less.
Therefore 4 is too much. I would not limit number for fax machine itself.
On receipt of fax sometimes seems like it will not work when answering machine picks up in the middle. However, leave it and it will work. Sometimes sender will hear your answering machine and cancel as well. So try to ensure they don't give up at other end as well.

This is a little late in response, but maybe it can help prevent some frustration for others. I had exactly the same problem, and I finally called Canon. They told me that the MP830 will only recognize and work with an answering machine, if the answering machine is plugged directly into the MP830.
This is really annoying. Our older, cheaper fax was easier to set up with a remote answering machine than this unit is. Maybe because it was a dedicated fax, and not a multifunction, I don't know.
At the moment, I'm trying to get Remote RX to function. This is when you pick up the telephone, realize that it's a fax transmission on the other line, so you type a pre-set, double-digit code into your handset to direct the call to your fax machine. This should suffice for our occasional faxes. I've had this machine for a couple of years, but I've never actually tried using the Remote RX setting. Hopefully it will work for us.

SOURCE: Cannot recieve or send faxes
Check out the Easy Setup Instructions available here. If you can neither send nor receive faxes, you may not have the phone line connected to the correct port, see page 34 of the guide. Also check what receive mode the machine is set for. Pages 42 and 43 explain the different options and how to change the receive mode.

From the wall your phone cable should go into the fax/printer. Then a phone cable should go from the printer to your phone.
There should be icons next to each jack on the back of the printer which indicates where to connect the cable.
It should work from there, but you might have to go to settings and set up the fax settings such as how many singals should it ring before the fax picks up the line.
