I have installed a new motherboard in an acer case. The power cable from the switch on the front of the case will not connect to the board. Can anyone help? Thank you

You should read the motherboard manual, for cabling:
1. Power SW
2. Reset SW
3. HDD led
4. Power led - and power led +
5. Speaker

Cabling scheme, also written on the motherboard.

If the Power SW not installed the switch on does not work.
If the Reset SW not installed the switch reset does not work
If the HDD led
not installed the hard drive light (red) is not lit
If the Power led (+/-) not installed the power light (yellow) is not lit
If the Speakers are not installed, when the computer is on the beep sound is not heard.

I hope this information helps.

I had to change the motherboard as it failed

Look at the front panel of the computer you will see the connections you have. Should be power, reset, power led, usb etc. These are connected to your current motherboard and most times all the connections will be labeled in the case, on the wire connector ends. IE the end that connects to the motherboard. The only exception to this is the usb ports, and they can be hooked up to new usb connectors on the motherboard. Also note, read i said READ the proper way to connect the usb to the motherboard, this is usually a one shot deal, get it wrong and you kill that usb connector.

Can't figure out where to put

Geta flash light and look at the lower right hand corner there you will see where they go. Since you did not include your motherboard type I can not send you a diagram but the pins in that corner will be marked so that you can tell where they plug in. You may need a magnifying glass to read the letters saying hddled, power led, pwsw, reset they also have little lines so that you know which way to turn your plug to plug it in. If this helps you leave rating and feedback thanks.

I tried several different cards but no luck. Cards work ok on other computers.

5V Stand-By Indicator LED
The power supply will always supply a 5V standby voltage to your
motherboard so that it can power on via for example Wake On Lan
technology. This LED shows that your power supply is supplying
this standby voltage to your motherboard.n :D

You may need to replace your power supply, if the LED is flashing, it's not supplying the power the motherboard needs.

I assume you are trying to connect the wires from the faceplate to the motherboard. Get a magnifying glass and see if the board is marked as to Power, Speaker, HDD LED, Reset, etc. Trace the wires to the faceplate and note what the function of each pair of wires is and attach to motherboard as necessary.
