Question about Dell Latitude C640 Notebook

1 Answer

Dell c640 charging problems.

I have a dell c540 laptop and i modify 3pin charger to 2 pin charger. So everything is normal, laptop itself works with AC and even with battery but it won't charge batteries. I connect + and - pins correctly but i left the ''third'' pin empty, i have heared that this ''third'' pin is charger control pin. Or is this pin for charging too or ..? I have also heard that i must connect this pin with + or- pin, ( i dont know which one) to charge the battery. Can anybody solve my problem?

i receive this laptop with broken charger, without the low-voltage chord and so i soldered a new chord with the regular 2-way plug. And also set a new 2-way socket on motherboard (i maintained this original 3 pin socket on MB just in case ) And does anybody knows where i can find a MB scheme for this laptop?

Something similar to the original poser. I couldn't find a suitable connector for the notebook for the car charger. So I cut the original cable (19.5vdc) and made sockets to adapt the car charger as well.

The third pin definitely has a function coz the battery is not being charged during car travel and at home (now). Before cutting the cable, there doesn't seem to be any voltage from the third pin (measured against the negative), so I would assume (at your own risk) that it's a return signal ( - ) to the notebook also.

My own remedy would be to get 3 way sockets for home use and use only 2 of the 3 way when in the car. Notebook uses power from the car but no charging unless someone can give a definite on what's the 3rd pin is about.

I don't know why you would modify the charger and then wonder why your battery doesn't charge? Is there a reason you did this?

Instead of spending alot of time trying to do something that could potentially harm your laptop..why not just buy a power supply?

You can get one here Click here for about 16 dollars. That's a great deal they are usually about $60 and its a Dell brand not some off brand.

Good Luck

Junk it for parts.

Windows Vista is not supported on Dell Latitude C540/C640. There are no drivers for the hardware of this model. Many older computers have that problem. You can try Microsoft to see if they even exist:
You might have to fall back to XP.

You might want to try another AC adapter. If it works, then call up Dell and have replacement on the AC adapter. Otherwise, call up Dell and have them check your motherboard. If the warranty is still active, then can still definitely replace that.
