SOURCE: compressor runs and runs but only builds 40lbs pressure

At the web address below you will find a parts list of your compressor. The most likely problem areas are the tube seal and the piston/cylinder. The tube seal seals the discharge tube to the head of the compressor. It will fail over time and cause the problem that you have. (only costs a few dollars) The other problem that you could have is a worn cylinder. Your compressor is oil free thus the piston ring is made of silicone vinyl and wears depending on conditions at the job site. Heavy dust/ dirt will shorten the life of the unit. With unit unpluged and covers removed, push the piston to top of stroke and examine upper portion of cylinder. If you see groves/scratches install cylinder kit. (cost around 39 dollars) In most cases I would replace both the seal and cyl kit. These parts are also available at your local dewalt service center or on line at dewalt.com. The folks at dewalt are very helpfull. Good luck with your repair and email if you have more questions.

SOURCE: Crank bearing cap blew out on Porter cable air compressor

Your compressor is sold under various part #s depending on brand name. The link below is the breakdown for ac-0171.
http://www.devilbissparts.com/OilLubeStat%20PDF%20files/ac-0171.pdf. You will notice that there is no vent to release internal pressure. Most brands have a filler/dipstick which is also a vent. As the compressor wears there is a normal increase in crank pressure caused by pressure passing thru the rings. I have seen home made vents installed on the bearing cap. If you are creative you can make one yourself using the same cap or a metal cap (axel bearing cap) that fits the opening. A crankcase vent is a very simple device. A small hole to atmosphere with a bit of oil resistant foam behind to prevent oil from being blown out the hole. Works best when there is a vent tube about a couple of inches long to catch any oil and allowing it to run back down into crank. Remember that there is oil sloshing around inside the pump. Examine several brands of compressors for vent and try to recreate that on yours. One thing in common about vents is that they are usually located pretty high up above the crankshaft. You could also try lowering the cut-out pressure on your compressor to reduce back pressure. Good Luck on your repair.

SOURCE: porter cable stand-up air compressor starts but air won't fill up

Might be the unloader valve is stuck. if so there will be hissing noise from switch assembly and you may have to get a new one.

The little compressors were not built for continuous duty. The pump probably seized, or the motor burned up, or both.

My Porter Cable pancake outlet regulator doesn't seem to work.

If your quick coupler is not jammed up, (remove & test) and assuming you are pulling the regulator knob out to adjust the pressure and it is not stripped, you will need a new manifold kit.
There are about 6 versions of this unit so you will need model and type to get the correct part. There are no individual regulator parts available for this unit.

I have a porter cable compressor, but the pump won't shut off, and the pressure won't build it

Hi

Here are a few things to check, you may have already checked some of these.

*Electricity...Compressors will run best with full 115Vot 15AMP/Or 220V electrical supply from a circuit, over the shortest electrical cord as possible.

*Air Leaks..Place your ear close to the compressor and listen for air leaking, if you hear air that is not normal and means you have to locate and repair whatever it is that is leaking.
*Check the air unloader valve... The air unloader valve will blown out air when you turned off the compressor, that is normal.
But it should not have air leaking out of it all of the time. If so then it is faulty and in need of repair/replacement.
*Valves...If either the intake or exaust valves fail, breaks, or fails to seat, then your compressor will run 24 hours a day and never build up to the correct pressure for shut-off.
*Gaskets...Check to see if your gaskets have failed.
You could have a gasket failure between the pistons and you will never know it because it shows no external air leak.
If this situation happens then the air will only cycle between cylinders and never build up the correct air pressure.
One way to check the gasket is remove the air filter, then put your hand over the intake.
If correct then it will **** you hand against the intake.
If the valve or valves have failed then you will feel the air sucking in and blowing out.
*Piston Rings and Cylinder...The piston rings could be stuck, broken, or worn and not allowing the correct pressure to build up in your tank.
A worn cylinder will also contribute to the problem of pressure build-up.
*Pressure Switch...Check for air leaks at the pressure switch, it has a rubber diaphram that can fail and leak air out of the system.

Won't start -Porter Cable Cable 135 PSI, 60 Gal compressor

ARE THE POINTS BURNT IN THE PRESSURE SWITCH? DO YOU HAVE A LEVER ON THE SWITCH SET TO ON OR AUTO? IF YOU THINK ITS THE SWITCH JUST BYPASS IT AND TIE THE WIRES TOGETHER TO SEE IF IT RUNS. BEWARE YOU HAVE NO PRESSURE PROTECTION EXCEPT POP-OFF VALVE. MOST P.O.S. COMPRESSORS LIKE PORTER CABLE HAVE 3500 RPM MOTORS AND HAVE A THERMAL RELEIF BUTTON ON THEM. JUST PUSH TO RESET. MAKE SURE YOUR WIRNG OR DROPCORD IS LARGE ENOUGH GAUGE. SMALL GAUGE DROPCORDS KILL COMPRESSORS.
