Page 4 of the manual says if you speak English, it will talk to you in English. The previous owner must be German.

Always follow the instructions carefully. Use only batteries specified and be sure to insert item correctly by matching the + and - polarity markings.

1) Replace the batteries. 2) Turn Furby upside down. 3) Press reset button on bottom of Furby for 2 seconds.. 4) If this is a second generation Furby, it may be in deep sleep, a condition rectified by simply turning the Furby upside down. 5) If this doesn't work, here is information regarding a jammed gear and how to free it:

I pressed the Refresh button for a few seconds. That fixed it for me after ours seemed to have stopped working.

So what you do you see the tail umder the tail you see a bump that bump is a zip tie so you have to cut the zip tie than you take the zip tie out and pull the fur up so now i want you to watch this vidieo go on you tube and type this in at the top fix my 1998 furby there is a vidieo with a white furby and its took apart and its by the lucky penny shop i hope it helps you because it worked for me i buw non working 1998 furbys and do that to them and i fixed 18 of them so hope is helps bye

Just fixed my sons after my older brothers tormented it. You have to pet it on the head till it goes through two or three stages and gets heart eyes. About 15 minutes.
