Question about Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003 for PC

1 Answer

_vti_cnf file I started using Frontpage 2003 to learn web page development and I started getting "_vti_cnf" files. They seem to be popping up all over the place. When I start up my computer and click on "All Programs" just about every program listed has a _vti_cnf folder in it. Programs like Norton Internet Security, Spybot, iTunes, Window Media, Pagemaker, Accessories, AOL Online, AOL Explorer, Canon Scanner, and many more. I even have 2 _vti_cnf files listed on the "All Programs" listing itself. Can you tell me why am I suddenly getting these files and how can I get rid of them. They are very annoying. Thank you

It's been awhile since I played with FrontPage but from what I can remember _vti_cnf folders are private folders that store data that the rest of the world cannot see. You can generally hide these folders by going to tools websettings advanced and then simply remove the check from the "show documents in hidden folders" checkbox Hope this helps! BXL830

Huge files of page maker 6.5 was kept in local drive F, when i tried to open the said files it does not open and show that this format cannot open with this application.

Try re-creating the preferences of your pagemaker software by following the mentioned steps: (Steps are mentioned considering you have Windows XP installed)

1. Close PageMaker id its running

2. Open the Program Files/Adobe/PageMaker 6.5/Rsrc/Usenglsh folder.

3. Rename thefollowing files (for example, to Pm70old.cnf):

-- Pm70.cnf

-- Pm70filt.cnf

-- Pm70ppd.cnf

-- PStyles.cnf files

4. Start PageMaker. It will re-create preferences files.

If the problem continues, the preferences files is not the cause. To restore custom settings, delete the new preferences files and restore the original names of the previous preferences files.

See if this works and reply back.

I had a similar experience. Perhaps this advice (from my Web Hosting provider thinkhost.com will help (However I was using FP 2003):

You can publish your web site from a copy on your own computer to your hosting account , or you can edit your web page directly on our server making the changes instantly available without having to publish.

To publish from your computer to our server:

* Open the copy of the web site you have on your computer

* Go to "File" then "Publish Web" on the FrontPage menu

* Type in the web address of your server based site http://www.fixya.com (whatever yours is ...)

* Click "Publish"

You will be then prompted for your hosting username and the password you assigned when installing Frontpage extensions.

To work on the live version of your site, open the web by going to File --> Open Web menu, and then typing in the web address for your site.

In this scenario, when you create or edit a file, you're editing it directly on the server, and therefore do not need to upload it, as it will already be there. Exercise caution, because if you make a mistake there really is no way to fix it, as the changes are instantly made on the server.

When using this method, we suggest you make a backup copy of your files in case a problem develops. Clients are responsible for maintaining their own backups.

Special note:

We strongly recommend not using FrontPage's FTP feature for uploading - all publishing should be via the http:// publishing option. The reason for this is that we've noticed many clients who are not familiar with the FrontPage FTP feature tend to accidentally delete critical folders or upload to the wrong folders. Using the http:// publishing option ensures that your site will be uploaded to the right folder in your account.

If you need to use FTP, we recommend using a dedicated FTP program - some of them are listed here.

I am getting an error code Server error: Cannot

Call up your web host and ask them to re-install or re activate frontpage extensions on the server which 'should' fix the problem.

From the knowledge base....
When publishing sites with FrontPage, my customer is getting the error "cannot open we80.cnf no such file or folder"

First, switch FrontPage OFF for this customer.

Then find and delete all frontpage directories and .htaccess files: find ./ -type f -name ".htaccess" -exec rm -f {} \;
find ./ -type d -name "_vti*" -exec rm -rf {} \;

Then switch FrontPage ON.

I just posted the last part in case the server admin needs it. Good luck Willine.
