Electric relay is smoking

From the power source, the first electrical devices are called relays, right? Well, one of those is smoking and smells like burning plastic. This happened after being doused with water from abig leak. I'm not sure what these are called so I can replace it.

I have a Boilermate Premeir with a Smart Control. I believe this is called a parasitic system and operates off a zone off the house's forced water heating system. The system has been installed for several years. We did have a problem with pipes freezing in the winter. I repaired the pipes and repressurized the system, though sometimes the system loses pressure and I add water again. I did bleed the air from the broken loop.

Now, the smart control of the Boilermate has a minus before the "On". It looks like -On. Sometimes the minus flickers. Sometimes it looks like the display will go off altogether and lately that has happened. The smart control makes a fairly loud buzzing noise, similar to a ******** motor.

It is on a 24v system. Sometimes, when its display is flickering I hear relays or solenoids on the boiler itself flick on and off. Sometimes the whole system shuts down. Then I must turn off the switches on the boiler, wait a bit, and then sometimes things seem almost normal when I restart things. The situation is getting worse.

Any things I should check? I have a meter and some electrical experience.

You are correct. They are relays. A low voltage operates a higher voltage.

When a electric water heater smoking and it gits turned off at the breaker box will there be a chemical smell after

No. A water heater is a sealed system it needs to be addressed for the original problem. High sulfur content has been a complaint as far as smell, and I remove the anode and replace with a brass plug because of. Shallow wells in the area largest complaints.

AE 125 Just Stopped Working Altogether,,,Still Has Power But No Light Or Hot Water?

Turn circuit breakers fully off and then back on.
Use nose to smell for burning inside main panel.
Make sure you are getting 240Volt and not just 120V from one leg of the breaker.
Do stress test on breaker panel.

If the relay is bad no source of power is going to make it work, you could try taking off blue covers.Kill power first!. there is a red reset button underneath push and turn power back on see if that works.Plus the breaker in the power panel might of popped, you'll see when you go to shut off power. If not thermostat is bad or heating elements, probubly stat, depending on age of heater, would be better to replace, most heaters have at least a 6 yr warranty, but that doesn't cover labor.Nothing wrong with system Hope that helps

I want to add an under-counter auxiliary water heater to my 15A dishwasher circuit. I need to install some sort of relay to cut out the water heater when the dishwasher is being run, to avoid overloading...

If I understand correctly you have 15 amp breaker with 14gauge wire.
Total watt capacity of 15 amp breaker is recommended at 80% rated load = 12 amps

You want to connect two appliances to same 15 amp line.
1) You have 6 amp Dishwasher that draws 720 Watts
2) You have under the counter water heater with 1500 Watt element that draws 12.5 amps.
3) Combined load is 18.5 Amps and 2220 Watts, approximately
So you do not want dishwasher and water heater turned on at same time.
Makes good sense.

Solutions:
> Easiest thing would be to put water heater on ordinary wall switch located inside sink cabinet.
Back when garbage disposals first came out, garbage disposal switch was inside sink cabinet. You opened cabine door and flipped the switch.
> Next solution would be to put water heater on a timer located under the sink. There are different timers. In-wall timers and box-type

In-wall timer would need relay/contactor
A battery operated timer like the ST01C would not need to be reset after power outage
http://waterheatertimer.org/Programmable.html
Here are instruction pages for selecting and installing the relay/contactor.

Add a comment any time.

Box-type timer like T101 120Volt timer. This timer needs no relay/contactor.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-T104-Intermatic-timer.html#T101
Timer needs to be reset after power outage, but operates on ordinary 120V power, and is simple to install.

> There is no easy way to wire the dishwasher and water heater together so one is certain not to operate when other is turned on. There are likely electronic control panels for that project. But since you know the hours when dishwasher is likely to be ON, then set water heater timer to turn OFF during those hours. Water inside tank will stay hot for a couple hours, so there is no loss.

It sounds like you are a solid electrician.

http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html

You have a 240V electric water heater because you have an upper and lower element

The upper thermostat works in the manner you have discovered
.
In residential electric water heaters, the upper element is ON or the lower element is ON, or both elements are OFF.
This is called non-simultaneous operation.
Non-simultaneous operation means the elements are never turned ON at the same time.

Because water heater thermostats only turn off one leg of the 240V circuit, the upper and lower elements will always have power on the two screws, but not across the two screws.
This power is 120V and the circuit is not complete so the element will not heat.
So if you test any element, it will always show at least 120V
Only when the thermostat clicks ON is the 240V circuit completed, and the element turns ON.

Identify the problem:
1) The shortage of hot water is caused by a bad upper or lower thermostat or a bad lower element.
We know the upper element is working because you have some hot water. If the upper element was burned out, you would have no hot water because the upper thermostat would never click over and send power to lower part of water heater.

2) It sounds like your upper thermostat is clicking on and off, so I would test the lower element.

Atwood GCH10A-4E won't heat in electric mode. 12v power to circuit board no 12v power to relay. Is new circuit board only solution?

CHECK THE FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN THE CONVERTER BOX. MAKE SURE THE 110V SWITCH BEHIND THE WATER HEATER IS TURNED ON. IF THERE IS POWER AND "ALL" THE 110V SWITCHES ARE ON, TIME TO OHM OUT THE HEATING ELEMENT, LOCATED UNDER THE BOX BEHIND THE WATER HEATER.
IN ORDER TO HAVE 12V AT THE CIRCUIT BOARD, 112V POWER HAS TO GO THRU THE RELAY. SOUNDS LIKE U HAVE A WIRING PROBLEM SOMWHERE, EITHER AT THE SWITCH OR AT THE WATER HEATER SOMEWHERE.

50 gal. Reliance electric hot water w/bottom element problems

Willard when you say it throws the reset button,do you mean the breaker on your fuse box of your home?
If you mean that then yes it could be a bad element. The bottom element takes all the abuse on a electric hot water heater. They can short out,and need to be replaced.
