No Green Color only Red and Blue

The TV picture is clear and crisp but has No Green colors. Bright Reds and Blues. I am thinking I simply need to replace a Green Bulb but I have searched all over the Web for such a thing and have come up empty. Perhaps there is another problem.

I am not a repair person....but I am trying to fix the TV without spending a lot of money.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Let's try the basics. A Sony KP-51WS500 uses 3 tubes to project the three color, red, blue and green. From the video signal source, it passes through a signal processor that splits the signals into these 3 component colors to finally it drives its individual/respective tube.

Based on the above, considerations and/or checks that could be performed:

  • is the missing green consistent on all video sources, TV Tuner (receiver), DVD player, VCR;
  • if yes, it confirms that is indeed the TV;
  • if not, then possible connection/connector problem;
  • if it is the TV, primary suspect would be the green tube. Each tube has a heater/filament, this has to be checked;
  • additionally, at the rear of each tube is a squarish PCB (printed circuit board most likely marked CG) that contains drive transistors and discrete components necessary for the operation of the tube. If any component is faulty, it would also cause no green drive;
  • the green PCB (as well as the red's and the blue's) would all get their signals from a video board (mostly marked E (Y/C/J);
  • as can be seen above, it would need checks and diagnosis.
This of course would require opening the unit, perform voltage measurements, determine faulty component and subsequent part(s) replacement. Further, a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron would be required. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual (RA6 chassis) or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Should the green tube be deemed faulty, replacements/rebuilding maybe available from here or here.

Check and perform preliminary visual or necessary inspection. Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

    You are right the stk's are what is causing the set not to come on. If you do not put heatsink compound on the back of each stk they run hot and will last under a year. Replace both and use heatsink compound and this should fix the problem.

Behind the television you need to open the television to see if the green color gun is working. If it is not I suggest that a repairman do the task because it needs to be aligned. Also if the technician does it you will have a warranty. First you have to decide if repairing it is worth it because if 1 color gun goes then you can bet that another one will go soon after. These color guns are not cheap. If might be beneficial to buy another tv depending on hold old this unit is. I hope this helps.

Screen hazzy and issue with blue convergence

bad convergence would cause show to look as if it was supposed to be a 3-d movie, if a bulb was going out then people would look purple blue -green,or some other off color, so likely the green bulb is going out from the color of the people you described.

Sony KP-53V45 color issues

When ever a tube starts to short or is shorted set always will have over bearing drive lines then shut down like RED if it was bad, set would come on long enough for red lines across set then shut down this is the same with all 3 tubes.Also if you think it might be green tube disconnected green CRT board on neck of green tube if set comes on and plays then it is green tube do all 3 tube this way one at a time this will tell you if you have other problems.

Phillips Model 60pp920217f

No. your problem is related to the coolant in the green CRT has congealed with bacteria and needs to be changed. Thats what causes the halos and general poor picture and color quality. The blue should be changed also. The red for some reason doesnt seem to be affected by the bacteria problem. This is a common problem that happens with all projection TVs phillips and magnavox TVs

My phillips model 60pp920217f has a horrible picture...no green to the color

The green CRT coolant has congealed thats whats giving you the green halos. Change the coolant in the green and blue and your set will be fine. red is never affected so the red coolant should be fine.

Yes you have a problem in the red crt driver board. Most likely the driver transistor is failing. This is a component level repair, so if you have no experience with TV repair, play it safe and call in a trained tech to assist you in this matter. Good Luck

Picture is yellow and green

Your missing the red drive on the set. Its most likly the picture tube. Its a possibility that the red drive circuit could be not working so the best thing to do is take off the gree picture tube socket and put the green board on the red tube. Of course do all this when the set is unplugged. if you have no tv experience. its not a good idea to be messing around inside of these sets.
