Contrary to what Bernina has said about their software (Bernina Embroidery Software v5), that particular software CAN be installed AND ran in Windows 8 with no issues whatsoever. When you install it, it will perform normally (not go to a blue screen like Bernina says), then it will ask you to insert the dongle. After installation, go to the Bernina Embroidery icon and right click. Select troubleshoot compatibility. The computer will run a test to see what system you should run the software as. It should say Windows XP Service Pack 3. Select next. Now double click your Bernina software and it should start up fine. Hope this helped.

Hi, Unfortunately any of Bernina's software that is older than Version 5 , will not work with Vista. There are some software patches available on the berninausa.com web site, but there is nothing out there that will help you if you have any Version 4 software or older. Microsoft really through out a curve ball to everyone with VISTA as there is a lot of software out there that will not work in that operating system.
Actually the lowest cost solution would be to get a nice used computer that runs Windows XP. You do not need a super fast, state of the art computer to run embroidery programs.
I bought a nice used computer at a yard sale for $10.00 and it even came with the XP install disk. I replaced the hard drive just because they do wear out after a few years, installed XP in it and that computer is now in my wife's sewing room and it is only used for her embroidery work.
You might have a computer repair shop in your area where you can buy an older XP computer that has been reconditioned. The few dollars you would spend to get an older computer would cost you far less than buying new Bernina Version 5 software. It is EXPENSIVE! Good luck...bushvideo

SOURCE: My Bernina Artista 180E no

Just use the free download software from Bernina called Artlink. I used it along with a USB to Serial converter cable to connect to the machine. Works wonderfully. Allows me to still use my old Artista designer software if I want to on an older machine and then when I want to actually transfer the designs I use the laptop with the USB cable.

I have installed artista v3.0 software and dongle on a machine running Windows 98. When I open the software to run it says it cannot see the security device.

Dongle will not be recognized
NOTE - If you have encountered any of the following when installing your v5 BERNINA Embroidery Software:
After the computer reboot the screen will prompt for the new dongle but will NOT recognize it.
After the computer reboot the screen will prompt AND recognize the new dongle but never ask for or recognize the older dongle.
The software installation seems to complete but when attempting to open the program you will get the tool tips for a period of time then get taken back to your Desktop.
After rebooting the PC, you get an "error 7" message in the black DOS screen.
You may try one of the following (NOTE: Disconnect ALL USB devices from the computer EXCEPT for the version 5 dongle. If doing an update, attach the old dongle only when prompted):
1. If the version 5 software is installed, go to MY COMPUTER > Local Disk C: > Program Files > BERNINA > Embroidery Software > BIN folder and in the BIN folder will be a file called 'DATAGATHER' or 'DATAGATHER.EXE'. Locate this file and double-left click it to restart the 'verifying the security device' process and should finalize the brain transfer.
2. If step 1 was not successful, you will next need to try to run the REPAIR feature from the v5 install CD. To do this, reinsert the version 5 installation cd, and choose the REPAIR feature when you are asked to make a choice. Click NEXT and YES to finalize the REPAIR and restart the computer when prompted

Also doesn't look like it will run on Windows 98. It is SOOO Old! Version 5 won't anyway.

I installed my V5 software on my new windows 7 laptop and installed ne w hasp drivvers but it still won'tsend my designs to my machine a Bernina180 artista it keeps saying no link to the serial port I have...

I know your machine needs to be the same version as the computor. Turn on your machine and emb unit, go into machine info (not sure exacly how to get there, its been a long timing). It should be V4.04 for machine and emb unit. If it is not your machine needs to be updated, should be free to very little charge at a bernina dealer.

Machine info should be one of the 6 buttons on the right.
Hope this helps

How to repair a bernina hasp lock

HASP or security device dongles were used on earlier Artista software. If your machine still has a parallel port and the HASP devie is on the connector then you probably upgraded windows over time. There is a XP device driver fix you may need to install. I recently loaded the ancient Artista software into a modern machine so I know it can be done. Just need to have the proper hardware support.

If all your trying to do is communicate with the machine from the PC then look into an USB to SERIAL converter and use the Artlink software from Bernina (free). Has much of the function that the earlier software did except for limited edit capabilities.

Have 4.0 software. When trying to load pattern to 180 Bernina I get the message no link to serial port.

Which version of Windows do you use? There is an additional software to download from the Bernina website for Windows XP which solves that problem.

Version 4 of bernina artista will not load on my new computer

I have a solution. (sorry for my bad english) Last week is the notebook of my wife broke down (mainboard was ten years old). So we bought a new one. So I tried install artista V4, no chance (bernina said, you can update to V5). Next step, I install a XP-Pro on the new notebook (no chance too, because I can't find all drivers, they don't develop new drivers for XP).

Now my solution:
I installed a virtual machine (vmware player) with XP-Professional (which I have). At this XP-Machine I installed the artista V4 - it runs!

You can find a lot of help for installing a virtual machine in the www.

If you want, I'll describe the install-process for my vmware.

I hope I could help!

David

I need to convert my parellel port dongle to USB

I have the same problem...V3 software. have not heard of an adapter. The software wouldn't work with Windows XP or Vista anyway. I upgraded to Editor plus V5 but have kept my old Designer plus on an ancient laptop so I can transfer old patterns. You will also find that your new laptop doesn't have a serial port to accomodate the old cable to bernina 180. Unfortunately it's always the case with updating a PC. Everything else has to follow! My advice, get hold of an old laptop:)

Connection problem with computer to sewing machine and reader/writer

Hello,
It is not true that the 180 is not compatible with new software.
I'm owning a artista 180 from 2002 and just installed the software designer V5+ on a laptop with windows vista.
The only problem was that there was no serial port on the laptop, now I have a new cable with USB ans serial output and the software works very well !!
When you contact Bernina you will get the same answer.

greetings Carla
