How to tell: have you got a spare monitor? plug the spare monitor into the (right) side of the laptop as i have done in the image: http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/1439/15062009001u.jpg as BillW50 has stated, once external monitor has been plugged in, press the combination of Fn and F4, this should switch the display to the external monitor you have just plugged in. If it doesnt work the first time, try the combination a few times as there are different modes for the Fn+F4 (such as LCD only, LCD + external, external only, external 1 + lcd 2....ect) if you get a picture on an external monitor but not on your laptop, then the most likely problem is with your laptop screen itself, which it is most safest to take to a computer/laptop repairs specialist. If you DONT get a picture on the external monitor, the scenario seems most likely in the computer's Graphics Card/Display Unit. A malfunction there is most likely causing a no picture or no signal to the LCD. In my situation, a picture had lasted on the Laptop's screen for about 10 seconds, then a very muddled up screen, then no picture, this was the result of the LCD within the laptop as you can see i have plugged in another computer screen to test my above theory. hope that can help you Tim

If you mean you hooked up an external monitor and you want to see the display there. Well there should be a Fn key combo to toggle the displays. It should be one of the keys that looks like a monitor plus the Fn key at the same time. Otherwise go into the Control Panel -> Display -> Settings and you can switch to the other monitor there. Hope this helps.

Screen of lenovo G475 does not want to light up. Laptop does start up

When you connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? If not then - The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's power socket could be faulty. Check power adapter's DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

When you press the start button nothing happen not light or start up

First remove the battery and put it back in, you want to make sure it has a good connection.

Next you want to check the power adapter. If it has a built in LED light, it should turn green when plugged into the wall. If it does have a light and the light will not turn on or it blinks, replace the adapter. Next, plug the adapter into the computer, does the LED light change? Example, the LED light was a solid green, when you plug it into the computer it blinks. If the light does something along those lines, then there is a problem with the laptop itself.

If the power adapter does not have an LED light, then you need to use a Multimeter to check if the adapter outputs the right amount of power...which should be around 12 volts.

If the battery and power adapter pass the tests, then you are looking at a hardware issue in the laptop. From your description of the problem, I would guess the motherboard has died or that the charging jack on the motherboard came loose and needs to be replaced or re-soldered.

Two things that would stop the light from coming on, No Power or Motherboard is broken.

Cannot get my computer to turn on

remove all external peripherals. remove laptop battery. remove ac adapter.
plug ac adapter to wall power socket without the laptop connected check if the ac adapter led will stays on. if yes then connect it to the laptop and check if the ac adapter led turns off. if yes motherboard laptop has problems and need to be replaced.
if ac adapter led stays off without connecting laptop, try different wall power socket, if still ac adapter led is off then replace the ac adapter.
if ac adapter has light stays on then connected to laptop but laptop cannot even power up even the ac adapter led is on then laptop motherboard needs to be replace.

My Laptop doesnt start at all . I dont know what

1. remove all ext peripherals
2. remove battery
3. check first the ac adapter if it has led on (make sure ac adapter is not connected to the laptop)
4. try any other wall socket check if ac adapter will led stay on
5. if ac adapter stayed on then connect to laptop (without the batter)
6. after connecting the ac adapter to laptop check if the ac adapter led turned off, if yes then check ac adapter laptop pin on the side if is loose or damage.
7. if ac adapter stayed on after connecting to laptop press now the power button on the laptop just once. check if the power led on laptop will turn on (check if power led stays on or it blinks amber)
8. if it blinks amber then remove all CRUs such as dvd drive, memory, hard drive and wireless cards. put them back one at a time. make sure you turn off laptop when putting removed hardware. this will check and isolate which causing the power led to blink.
9. if the power led stays on then turn it off again then wait a couple of seconds then press and hold on Fn key then press power button. wait for about 5 minutes while the power led is steady on, until you hear beeps once you hear beeps it means that LCD has problems. try then connecting laptop to an external monitor if it shows display there. press on Fn + F8 to toggle the display from LCD laptop to the ext monitor. if no display replace the motherboard. if it has display replace LCD.

My charge light constantly flashes orange and my C600 won't turn on at all. I hold the power button and all the lights turn off. I got nothing. Just a blankscreen.

When you say charge light, was that the battery led light that you were referring to or the power button?

If it is the battery led light, try this:
Try to power on your laptop without the battery in your laptop.
take out the battery and just use the ac adapter, if it works fine then there could be a problem with your battery.

If is the power button that is flashing orange, then try to power cycle laptop.
turn off laptop.
take out the battery and the ac adapter.
then while those are out, you hold down power button for atleast 10-15 seconds.
put back the power source and check the led again.

HP DV2036ea i have a blank screen on the computer

Hello there

Description.

When pressing the notebook power button nothing is displayed on the screen or display. The cause of this problem may be a failed AC adapter, the memory modules (RAM) need to be reseated or a failed notebook system board component which will require an HP certified repair.

Below steps will assist in identifying the cause of the problem and suggest the best solution. Test the AC adapter Follow the steps below to determine whether the problem is related to the AC adapter or your notebook system board.
  1. Remove the battery and disconnect all external devices from the computer.
  2. Hold the Power button for several seconds, with all power sources removed. This drains residual power from the system, and may correct many problems.
  3. Connect the AC adapter to a wall outlet and plug the other end into the computer.
  4. Press the Power button to start the notebook PC.
If the notebook does not start or the display is blank then check the power indicator light or power socket LED. Check the power indicator light or power socket LED On newer models of notebook PCs, there is an LED or indicator light around the power socket on the notebook. Check to see if this light is on or off, when the notebook is plugged into AC power. The power indicator light or power socket light should turn on when the AC adapter is connected.

  • If the light does not turn on then the problem is most likely related to the AC adapter or the electrical source in your home or office. Go to the Light does not turn on section on this page.
  • If the light does turn on but the notebook does not start or the there is a blank screen then continue to the Light does turn on but the notebook does not start section on this page

The light does not turn on when the AC adapter is connected If the power indicator LED is off, the AC power adapter may need to be replaced. To determine if the AC power adapter needs to be replaced follow the steps below:
  1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged directly into a known working wall outlet.
NOTE: To check the wall outlet, plug in a different known working device like a light, radio etc.
  2. Check all of the following connections:
    • The connection from the power cord to the wall outlet.
    • The connection into the power adapter from the power cord.
    • The connection from the AC adapter to the notebook power socket.
  3. Press the power button again to test the notebook PC.
If the power indicator light still does not turn on, then the AC Adapter needs to be replaced. Contact HP Service and Support for further assistance. Power socket LED or power indicator light is on but the notebook does not start If notebook power indicator light (LED) is on, the AC adapter is working correctly. The problem is a result of a hardware failure in the notebook itself. In some cases, reseating the memory module (RAM) may solve the problem.
