Impeller and auger don't engage

My snowblower auger and impeller don't engage must of hit something hard. i look down oil leaks from the back? what happen what can I do ?

    its working now impeller was jammed with ice, stones, oil leak no more

    auger doesn't turn. was fine yesterday when shut off. could this be sheer pins?

Hi, I will try to help you with this problem. I think the problem might be an adjustment issue. If you take the cover, usually plastic, situated just in front of the engine housing, you will see the belts and pulleys. Without the engine running, press on the auger/impeller lever, and if you look inside you should see how the belt is made to engage the auger pulley. Probably by an idler pulley that pushes on the belt to make it tight to turn the big pulley. That is the most popular way, it is to loosen the bolt on the idler pulley and push it towards the belt so it applies more pressure to the belt to turn the auger pulley and tighten the bolt. There could also be an adjustment on the linkage that might be adjustable. Another possibility is that the belt is worn and is riding on the bottom of the pulleys therefore not providing enough friction to turn the pulleys properly. I think if you take a good look at that system you will comprehend it. Hope this is helpful. All the best and good luck. I will gladly answer any other questions.

Every time I hit a newspaper at the end of the drive, I snap the shear pin. It's just a little nun and bolt deal and probably cost me less than anything at the JD dealer. It's located on the impeller shaft at one end and is simple to replace. To check it, engage the PTO, look at the inner impeller shaft turning while the outer shaft remains still. To install, align the holes, put the bolt in, screw on the nylon lock nut. Be sure to buy at least two, they go often.

Troy-bilt snowblower smokes when I try to engage auger. It’s the belt burning, but do I simply just replace the belt or is it something else that’s causing the belt to burn?


How old is it? Model? Can you move the auger single stage or augers 2 stage by hand when in neutral. Could be a ice jamb. or bad bearing. Do this with the unit NOT running. If it's a 2 stage take a 2X4 and insert in the chute
and try to wiggle or move the impeller. Bent impeller/auger? Maybe. check them visually.

Either there is a belt or a chain off, or the linkage became disconnected or there is a pin sheared. Take one of the three. If you have power spinning like you said then those are your choices! Best of luck to you. Hope you beat the weather!

Fix ariens snowblower 520 dies when engaging the auger lever


Your front end is jammed. Its either frozen or there is a rock or something jamming it up. Before you start engine reach down chute and turn back impeller that throws the snow out of blower. Should turn freely. when its free its fixed. You will probably need a new belt.

Auger blades are spinning


sound like you might have 2 problems. If auger doesn't engage in heavy snow you probably just have ice accumulation inside the impeller. Dont try to engage until impeller is cleared of snow (shut off and unplug spark plug before cleaning) Second if blades are spinning than you must have hit something in your path and broke the shear bolt (about 2 bucks at hardware shop) remove the old bolt and replace it and it should work again if this is the problem. Continuous clunking when i engage the auger on my snowblower


check for bent blower and auger blades
check rear blower bearing, engine off( grab rear of shaft pull up and down) shouldnt move very much. if it does bearing bad

Aurgur not turning on Simplicity Snow blower.


The Woodruff key that splines the drive shaft to the drive pulley could be sheared. I had this problem, and could not get a new key to work as the cut in the shaft for it opened up. I drilled through the collar and the shaft, put a grade 8 bolt with a locknut on it, and that fixed that
