Question about Garmin nuvi 260W GPS Receiver

Open Question

Corrupted map on a Garmin 260W, can't get out of bootloop?

Tried to perform a software update to the device. After loading for a while, a dialog box showed up but I accidentally hit exit on the box, and disconnected the device. Now the device will only boot to the Garmin logo, then it restarts and does the same thing. If I try connecting the USB cable to it, it says "loading maps" at the bottom, then shows a picture that indicates it's being connected to a computer, and then a bar starts loading, but stops about halfway and it restarts, doing the same thing. Is there any solution to this? The warranty is no longer available.

SOURCE: I have freestanding Series 8 dishwasher. Lately during the filling cycle water hammer is occurring. How can this be resolved

Hi,
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

SOURCE: Garmin Map update 2008

you will need to install the usb driver which should be located on the 2008 disk. When you attach the gps to your computer it should ask where the usb driver is located. If your dvd drive is (D) click browse and go the disk and find usb driver folder. I have purchased the new 2008 disk and had problems with it freezing on loader loading. I then browsed the disk and downloaded and then was able to get to the maps. I did not install it due to it asking what map I want to download. I wanted the whole thing so needless to say I am taking it back to walmart. I hope this helps.

Hi,
Take a look at this site, http://www.garmin.be/missing.html Download and unzip the software, plug your garmin in the USB and start the updater.exe program. It gets you started again. Later on you can use the Webupdater to get possible newer software..
It worked for me and my Zumo550

Please ensure that the device is receiving a charge while it is connected to the vehicle power cable. If the battery is receiving power from the vehicle power cable then the battery icon (located next to the time) would disappear from the Main Menu. clip_image001.jpg clip_image002.jpg
If the unit does not power on while attached to the vehicle power cable please follow steps from below to perform a soft reset:

  1. Connect the device to an external power source1
  2. Slide and hold the power key to the on position for 15 seconds
The device should power on. Notes:
  1. Preferably the vehicle power cable or a USB cable from a computer
  2. Some of the older Nuvi 200 series will have a reset button on the bottom of the device. It can be found on the bottom of the device on the same sticker that the serial number is printed on.
If your GPS unit powers down before it can fully boot up, the battery will need to be charged. Please charge the unit with the vehicle power cable or on a computer for at least three hours. After charging the unit, it should power on and function normally. If the unit will not charge in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.

SOURCE: My garmin nuvi 1350 freezes

I geard a lot question about Garmin Freezen when updates firmware; if you have firmware v3.1. I suggest you try to install v3.0 instead.

Keep in mind Hard Reset warnings:
* Note that this procedure has been known to delete your favorites so back them up beforehand: From the nuvi drive, copy x:/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx to your backup location. After the hard reset, copy current.gpx back to the same folder on the nuvi but rename it temp.gpx (important). On the next power cycle, the favorites will be read from temp.gpx into the non-user accessible memory area on the nuvi where they are actually stored (current.gpx is only a shadowed backup of your favorites)

* Note that this procedure will clear all user selected settings under Tools>Settings like map view mode, navigational settings, selected vehicle, selected voice, etc. These settings will need to be re-configured afterwards. It will also clear out your Recent Finds so make sure you save these as favorites or archive them in another way. Maps, vehicles, voices and user-loaded custom POI's stored on the unit will not be disturbed.

Hard Reset Procedure: (All except the 8x0/8x5/37xx series units):
1. Power the unit off.
2. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
3. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears.
4. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot.

Reset all your location settings and user preferences. Also restore your favorites using the method outlined at the beginning of this post.

nuvi 8x0/8x5 series hard reset:
To perform a master reset on a nuvi 800 or 805 series device:
1. Remove battery from n?vi
2. Place battery back into n?vi
3. Touch-and-hold the bottom right corner of the touch screen when a progress bar appears
4. Release the screen when "Do you really want to erase all user data?" appears
5. Touch "Yes"

Reset all your location settings and user preferences. Also restore your favorites using the method outlined at the beginning of this post.

*Note that a "power-cycle" (or power-on/power off sequence) on the nuvi 8x0/8x5 units consists of removing, then reinserting the battery into the unit -or- sliding the power switch to the ON position and holding it there for ~10 seconds. Using the power switch normally on the unit (slide to ON position and immediately release) to power it off only puts the unit into a "sleep" mode.

nuvi 37xx series hard reset:
1. Power off the unit (press/hold the power button for ~7 seconds)
2. Power on the unit
3. When the Garmin copyright screen is displayed, press & hold the bottom-right corner of the screen
4. Release the screen when "Do you really want to erase all user data?" appears
5. Touch "Yes"

Alternate method:
1. With the unit powered on at the map screen, press the bottom-right "Speed" field which will take you to the Trip Computer page
2. Press/hold the area just above the numerical speed on the round speedometer dial (where the compass heading is displayed when moving)
3. After pressing this spot for ~7 seconds, you will enter diagnostics mode
4. Select the first option displayed "Clear all user data", then follow the prompts

Reset all your location settings and user preferences. Also restore your favorites using the method outlined at the beginning of this post.

If possible after the hard reset (all units), let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire satellite almanac data.

Even you have warranty? Contact Garmin site.

Also, could contact this site poi-factory.com/node/6656

Or this: Repair Freezing On Startup for Garmin Nuvi 1350 LMT

Hop helps.

I have a garmin 260w that was a gift in dec 2009. I want to update the maps to the unit and thought there wasa n option at no charge but I cant find it. Do you have instructions on how to update unit for...

Sorry, no free maps. I know I've tried. You either live withthe old map or buy the latest version.
I bought the life time maps updates and I'm glad I did.
I've updated my maps at least 6 times.
New maps are about $70.
Life time maps are about $99 (when I bought mine)
BUT FIRST make SURE you have the latest software in YOUR computer and in YOURGarmin before you load any maps.
You can get that FREE at Garmin here:

To download the latest unit software visit Garmin website: www.garmin.com/webupdater First you have to set up an account at Garmin using theserial number on your GPS. Once you do that you can download firmware updatefor free. After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect yourcompatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from yourcomputer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start","Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater" REMEMBER: It takes hours to do a complete a mapupdate.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps. By the way, thecorrect Garmin approved power OR download cables are a must!! Does this help? Let us know. Thanks.

Maps won't load. Screen says "Loading Maps" when turning it on, but it never loads.

You may have one of two issues. One, the power cord, 12 volt adapter cord may be broken and needs replacement. A defective cord will cause erratic behavior in the Garmin GPSs. You can get one from Garmin.com
Or... your software may have become corrupted (for whatever reason) and needs to be updated/reinstalled. To do that, you may go here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download.jsp

Your maps are old. You really need to update and it may cost you. I really like you 260. I have the same. For about $100 you get new maps for life. Well worth it. Or you can buy new maps as they become available, but those cost $80 each!! Doesn't take much to decide that.

BEFORE you connect the Garmin to your computer you must download the free Garmin program on your computer called UPDATER. Did you do that?
