I have a source hooked up via Digital Opitical (toslink) to the my Denon AVR-1508 and a 5.1 speaker system hooked up to that. My issue is that the only mode that seems to play the subwoofer is the DOLBY PLII CINE mode, and in that mode something seems wrong with the speakers, i.e. the vocals in music are coming from only the center speaker with the other music coming from the sides. This may seem ok, but I want to change that. In 5CH mode, the sound comes out properly from all the speakers, but the subwoofer doesn't play. Please help!

It sounds like you overloaded the Denon avr with too much resistence from the speakers. Please check the total resistence of the speakers before you connect them all. Also check that the speakers or their wires are not shorted!
connect the hdmi to the tv (hdmi input 1) and to the receiver (hdmi output) you must make sure that the receiver input settings are assigned correctly. Then hook up all of your devices to the receiver. remember that the 1508 dosent do hdmi upconversion, so if you have any devices that are NOT hdmi, you need to run rca cables from the output of you receiver to the input of your tv. If you have any digital inputs coming out of your devices, i would recommend using them. your 1508 has two inputs that are assignable. If all of your devices are hooked up to your receiver, and its hooked up to your tv properly, just turn down the sound on your tv, and turn up the volume on your denon!
Most new receivers have a fan on the back, if you have one check to make sure it is working, most won't activate until the unit gets warm, other issues are bad solder connections on the audio outputs causing intermittent shutdown, as a final inspection check speaker connections to the receiver and speakers.
Not familiar with this model but seems like the protection circuit is kicking in, this could be caused by an imbalance of Ohms between channels or a short. remove & check all speakers and cables for continuity or shorts, does the unit power on without speakers or in a different mode (surround off).
always add speakers in pairs (L&R) before testing to prevent possible protection circuit, test main speaker pair first then add surrounds (all according to the allowable Ohms range for the amp of course)
Sounds like you hooked them both up to HDMI input ports. Make sure that the PS3 is connected to an HDMI input port on the AVR-1508, and that the TV is connected to an HDMI output port (not an input).
Check for nearby wireless devices and move them away.
-If the audio output from the source device (i.e. DVD, CD player) is digital (i.e. PCM, DTS or Dolby Digital) you're on your own.
I'd be willing to bet the output is analog (red and white RCA), because the
"beeps" and "exploding sounds" you describe seem like it could be caused by interference. Try replacing the cables. Otherwise the issue is probably with your receiver.
