SOURCE: Rinnai Heater - error message "12"

An error code of 12 on your heater means a flame failure has occured. It could be the following: Flame Rod dirty, Obstruction in burner, improper gas pressure, or a bad ignitor board. I am suggesting you get a technician who is familiar with Rinnai products to check out the above items.

I had the same problem.
Try cleaning the two filters at the  back of the heater very thoroughly. It worked for me.

The 417 service manual is dated 2003, so they're no more than 7 years old.  You can download the operation & service manuals here:

I have a Convector 417 RC-417-80 that starts fine but after about 5 minutes stops working. Any ideas?

Steve, there are a several of basic things that can cause this problem.

1. Air filter is clogged. Turn electrical part of unit OFF, Remove and Clean Filter, if necessary.

2. Air intake obstruction. Look for air intake obstruction around the front of the heater.

3. If your unit is a flue-less heater, Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) may be partially clogged with
dust, link or pet air. Clean Pilot Assembly using canned compressed air with a straw nozzle (like
you clean your computer with).

4. Gas pressure fluctuation to the heater. This will require a service call from an authorized Rinnai
Service Technician,

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem.

Is there any possibility my Rinnai econoheat850 gas heater can give off carbon monoxide?

Any time there is combustion of any type fuel, from a Rinnai heater to a car engine. There is always a small amount of Carbon Monoxide given off. But, it's usually in small insignificant amounts.

Since your model is a Vent-free or flue-less model, the chances are a little higher. This usually occurs if the heater has not been properly and regularly maintained. Keep in mind, flue-less heaters take in household air for combustion, heat it and send it back out. Whatever is floating in the household air (duct, lint, pet hair, etc) is pulled into the heater. These things can clog the burner(s), the pilot and the Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) and cause incomplete combustion. Which translates into higher than normal Co levels. However, your unit is equipped with an ODS, that will shut the gas off to the heater, if the household oxygen level reaches 25%. Which is not the danger level, which is 19%. Once the Oxygen level returns to 30%, the ODS will release the gas valve and gas will return to the pilot, so that you can relight it.

When properly maintained and operated according to the Owners Manual (see link below) they are totally safe. In the last 20 years, millions of vent-free/flue-less heaters have been sold and operated throughout the world. There has never been a death related to their use.

Certainly, if you or your family think you are experiencing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, stop using the heater and have a qualified Rinnai technician check and service the heater. If you have other gas appliances in the house, it may be one of them causing the symptoms and not the heater. You may want to have those check and serviced, too.

My Rinnai heater starts then stops after 5 -10mins flashing 14.

14 is an error code alerting you that the unit is heating up too hot. Check the air filter and make sure it is clean. You may have to take the front panel off and inspect the burner area for any signs of overheating. Remove the trim panels closest to the wall and clean out any debris from behind the heater. Let us know next time what model you have. Good luck!

After starting dishwasher to do a normal wash with heated dry, the dishwasher stops and Clean light blinks 7 times, pauses and this continues until I reset the machine. After reset it goes to rinse only...

Hi

Please check if the clean light is blinking 7 times. If yes then please reset the power to the dishwasher. After, 5 minutes check if you are still getting the same error. If yes, then it is a water heating fault. To resolve this error try pressing this reset sequence-- Heat Dry - Normal - Heat Dry - Normal or High Temp - Air Dry - High Temp - Air Dry.

If this doesn’t work then its an issue with the heater circuit, door switch, wash pump not pumping the water past the heater efficiently or due to lack of water to heat. Please make sure that heater is not open circuited and is heating the water efficiently. If heater is fine then make sure water pressure is optimum and fill valve is working fine.

Please post back for further assistance.

I have a rinnai heater and it stopped working all

rinnai, toyostove and monitor heaters are basically all the same. first you have to make sure your fuel valve is open at the tank. next you have to reset the tank lockout on the sump. then set your set point higher than your room temperature. now press on. the unit will go through a 300 second purge cycle. the pot heater should turn on when the purge cycle starts. after the purge cycle the fuel pump turns on and pumps fuel into the pot. when it vaporizes the igniter lights it. when a flame is detected the flame rod says ok to keep running so the fuel pump shifts into high speed. when plenum temperature reaches a preset level the fan turns on.

#14 is the code for over heat. Clean the circulating fan and blower blades. If there is anything on the top of the heater it need to go. Check the sides to make sure nothing is obstructing the air entering the back of the unit.

Rinnai Econoheat 850 gas heater

Hi Daryl,

It needs a service. The jets carbon up and when they heat up they stop the gas getting through. If you take it to a Gas Shop they will charge you around 90-00 to service it and all they will do is blow it out with compressed air. If you can get hold of an Air Compressor with an Air Blower on the end you can blow it out yourself. Remove the Gas Hose from the back and place the Air Blower into the hole where the gas goes through and hold down the ignitor switch to open up the jets. Give it a good blow out. Once you have done that give the candles a blow as they eget dirty also. You will see a white dust more than likely come out of them. If you want to give it a good clean out remove the cowling and clean (blow out) the inside of the Heater. The cowling from memory has only about 6 or 8 screws holding it on. That should take the top and sides off. I can't remember if you can remove the lower vent on that model - if so it will only be either 2 or 4 screws. Hope this Helps.

Regards
Bryan
